Going to be working on this outfit over the next little while and wanted to set up a build thread for accuracy checks.
Here is the fabric next to a white piece of paper in natural light along with the cord I purchased for the lacing on the front princess seams and shoulders. (I know the lacing in the V neck will have to be thicker. )
It is a faux suede that is suede on both sides. (No satin like you find with some faux suede) and doesnt fray so I can do a nice raw edge. |

Still hoping for any comments on my first post regarding my current fabric selection but also had another couple of questions pop up.
Question 1:
The dress has a belt/sash in the same material as the dress tied around the seam separating the bodice from the skirt. The belt is wide, approximately 3” / 7-8 cm and folded double with a top stitch along the ‘open’ side
Not sure I fully understand this part of the standard.
I am interpenetrating this as the pattern piece should be 6" and then folded over making its final width 3" and the raw edge is stitched down correct? Image below if I not making any sense.
Question 2:
The X lacing is on both the back and the front princess seams correct? |

Hi! Sorry! I meant to comment on your post yesterday in LotL but got busy. I should state I am NOT a judge but I recently had this costume approved so I can at least provide guidance from that side of things.
You are correct about the belt. It is that wide and then folded over on itself and tied in front.
The fabric looks great! I think you found an excellent color for it. Good luck on your build.
Yes, the X lacing continue through the back of the gown. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Thank you so much for the input LeiaAurora!
I noticed that some Leia's have a pleat or maybe it is a seam at the back of the underskirt and others dont. Are the ones with the seam/pleats correct?? It doesnt say there is one the standards.
Photos of what I have seen below:

Hi and welcome.
No pleat, just a seam down the back. It's not required, but necessary when you work with real hides. I've got one, too. (As my picture show).
And yes, the sash/belt really is that wide. I did mine by making a huge rectangular piece with straight ends, folded it over and stitched it down, then cut the ends to ensure they got an even point.
And your fabric looks very nice. It's hard to find a fake suede that doesn't have shiny satin on the back. If your fabric doesn't fray then you can simply cut the wider cord for the neckline from it.
I'll be honest and say I wrote most of the current standard after spending a couple of years in research and construction of this costume, where I spend a lot of time identifying different details of the costume, so I can probably answer just about every question on it. I just have a bit of a busy schedule, so I can't be on the forums all the time. _________________

Oh no worries! I just thought I would keep posting questions as the came up so I wouldn’t forget. Thank you for your answers!
I was able to make a great deal of progress on this costume and actually submitted now. Hopefully I get approved or have only a couple adjustments to make.
Here is the final dress and a makeup test.

Chiming in that when I was being judged, the back seam was asked for which mine initially didn’t have. Again, probably depends on your judge. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! Been a busy few weeks . _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019
