Hi everyone and especially all hopefully one-day-fellow-pilots,
I am Agnes from Vienna (Austria).

I thought it was time to start my WIP, even though it will take quite some time, I guess. However, this gives me a place to ask questions and encourages me to keep going. Photos will follow as well.
There are plans to build X-Wing pilot costumes as a group of about 6.

I've been researching resources and options for quite some time now,
but am still undecided regarding most of the parts - undecided what I am going to build myself or which resource / builder / shop I want to buy from.
Being located in Austria, Europe, makes things partly more difficult or at least more expensive (if I want to order form known and recommended sellers), regarding shipping costs and customes / taxes.

I like to compare different options and to research as thoroughly as possible. This tendency can be obstructive, however, aiming for "the best" solution ;-)

- Orange flight suit
bought, but still needs adjustments (although made after measurements; my shape might be too complicated or unusal)

- Mid-calf boots
ok, bought in a local army shop

- leg flares & leg band holder
missing; will make the band holder myself, already have the fabric; a friend will make the leg flares (3d print and cast)

- ejection harness & web belt
missing, will make it myself; already have the fabric

- Flak Vest
missing but ordered

- Chest box
kit ordered & received from the UK

- Code cylinders
ok, made by K.F. from Bavaria, Germany

- Black gauntlet gloves
ok (after some struggles)

- Comm pad
almost done (by a friend)

- Helmet
kit ordered & received from the UK

(- Mini-Flares on belt)
missing; a friend is going to make them (3d-print / cast)

(- accurate belt buckle)
ok; just have to get the golden shine off

Concerning leg flares, I am unsure about their material or rather which material I shall use.
I think metal ones look nicer, more neat and "classy" (and they are preferred according to the Costume Standards).
However, as far as I can see from resource pictures (which are not so easy to find, in my opinion),
the original / movie used ones seem to be quite rough / "plump" and dull in colour.

I wonder if anyone knows what originally was used for the movie costumes,
and what your opinion / preference is!

The originals were wood painted silver. Metal is up to you but not required as long as they look as they do on the screen.

I am still using the same wooden ones I made almost 20 years ago.

Gloves were a hugh dissapointment, unfortunately.
The quality was poor and not as pictured.
It was a bit difficult to get a refund, but finally I received it.

So I'll get back to my research list and to recommendations by others - preferably a European vendor and size S or XS (circumference of about 7,25 inch / 18,5 cm), which is not that easy to find.
A lot of companies offer sizes starting with (men's or unisex) M.

Ideally without any darts, but I think I might have to let go of that criterion.

Update: I got gloves from another UK-based vendor. The lining is not cotton as described, but otherwise they fit well.

PostPosted: Sat May 26, 2018 12:31 pm    Post subject: question on harness / belt (strapping material, colour) Reply with quote

Hello again,
doing research on the ejection harness, the following questions came up:
is there a preference for a certain strapping material?
"average" webbing / straps (similar to the one for the leg flare holder),
or rather safety belt material as used for cars or airplanes?

Some makers / sellers of harnesses seem to use safety belt material and I have seen it on several approved pilots; this material seems a bit "smoother" and has a sort of stripe pattern at the same time; it also looks a bit more "sophisticated" to me.
However, in the few OT movie resource pictures that I found, it rather seems to be a more simple and rougher strapping or webbing.

I want to do the harness myself.

I don't know if you can tell anything from the pictures, but the upper one was labeled as "car safety strap" in the shop, the other one shows "average" nylon straps in two different shades of grey.

Also, to me the belt seems to me of a slightly darker colour than the harness.
Costume standards don't mention a difference of colour, and I even might be mistaken in my judgement!

Are there guidelines for "more accuracy", or is there a variety of acceptable solutions? Help would be appreciated - as always Smile

Any opinions on the harness material and potential colour difference between harness and belt? Feedback would be really appreciated!

The harness should be made of strapping webbing instead of seat belt webbing. Silver-gray in color. The belt should be the same, and the same material for the belt flare loops, just in a 1 inch size. Smile

You can go a shade darker for the belt if you want and that would be fine. Either way is acceptable, as long as it's still a silver-gray color and not charcoal gray.

Another month / season, another question Razz
A friend of mine is currently making the compads.

Regarding paint-scheme, there seem to be two options for approval:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26363

However, I see the first one with the blue-gray more often on approved costumes (but the other one quite often for sale).

Are the two paint-schemes equally unconditionally approvable, or do they (especially the second one with more red) require certain specifications for the chest box or other costuming parts?

Curious to see the answer to that.

I went with Option #1 since it seemed far more common for OT pilots. Best to match the others in your base, I think, unless you're purposely trying to look different.

Nope, both commpads are perfectly acceptable no matter what chestbox button combination you may have! Pick which one you like best. Smile
