I should probably take all of these photos and tips and suggestions and turn them into a tutorial to put at Endor Bunker...
LOTS of great info in this thread! _________________

I can confirm that Michaels has the paints. I went to Joanne last night, and they only had 1 color that I needed. I called all of their stores in the area, and no Joannes in my area had them.
Frustrated, I stopped into Michaels on the way back, and they had a huge selection!!!
Lesson learned: Call before you drive and make sure they have it!!! _________________ www.blackburn-photography.com

I finished painting my first duster last night. As a word of warning, you might want to purchase several extra cans of paint before starting a duster.
The duster I did was for a friend, and it was a 80/20 poly cotton lab coat with a cotton extension for length. I first dyed it in tan RIT to try to give it a good base. The cotton took it well, the poly/cotton mix... not so much. This required the use of a LOT more paint to even get a good base before trying for a camo pattern.
If I were to do another duster again, I would:
1) sew a duster out of tan cotton, and skip purchasing one.
2) buy 3 cans of basil for the base paint layer. Because the inside of the duster can be seen when open, I felt it was important to paint much of the inside as well. It could take 2-3 full cans just to get a good base to put the other colors on.
IMHO, the duster used about 4-5 pants' worth of paint. I had previously painted 2 pairs of tan BDU pants with 1 set of paints, and had about 1/2 of a can left. Maybe 1/3. So figure that you can do at least 2-3 pairs of pants with 1 set of paints. The duster will use at least 2 full cans, maybe more, to get a good base on before hitting with other colors. Be prepared for this if you're starting with a white lab coat. Even with a tan base, it is still a LOT of surface area to paint. Better to spend an extra $13-14 dollars for 2 extra cans and give it a quality base layer of green.
So with that said, here are 2 pics of the duster. The first was in decent light, the 2nd... a little darker. I'll get some good pics tonight, but here goes:
So just a word of warning if doing a duster: Buy a lot of extra paint!!! _________________ www.blackburn-photography.com

The RIT instructions say that synthetic threads do not take the dye well.
Although I have had good luck with the liquid RIT as opposed to the dry powder. _________________

Yes, I saw that, Donna. I can read directions, too. Even before I did it, but I had to work with what I was given. I used the liquid and hot water, but it only took about 30% of the color. In a nutshell, I think dying it was more useless, but it just requires a lot of paint to cover all the space. No big deal, it
Here they are under better light:

Whoops! I need to relink them. We lost Sunrider's private forum in 2008 and I probably got too busy to redo it.
UPDATE: Looks like all her photos are gone. I'll have to try and re-create it. _________________

Maybe this thread should be in the Tutorials section? _________________ "You like me because I'm a scoundrel."

Reposted from a main forum thread so it's easier to find:
"I'll do a detailed write up later, but here is a sequence of my last jacket being painted:
^ Painting the inside edges and inside of the hood, to match the "Smithsonian" display photos.
If I do another one, I'll leave even more tan showing." _________________

Wow, 10 days shy of a year.
I updated the tutorial in the first post. I split it up between the regular Trooper camo and the Han Solo hero camo. _________________

In our area (western New York), the paint is not available at any of the Joann's or Michael's. However, I found them online at Wholesalefloral.com for $7.34 a can. If you "Like" them on Fscebook,or search online for a simple discount code you can get a 5% discount. Obviously there's a shipping cost, but you can get all the cans you want in all the colors without the hassle of running around trying to find them at the craft stores. |
