Hi all,
I'm trying to plan for my first build(s) and was hoping to get your advice on fabric. I'm looking at doing Leia's Ewok Village dress and would prefer to use synthetics for the dress rather than working in suede. I think I've found a fabric that will work (albeit with some interfacing for rigidity) Do you think this fabric would be acceptable?

Thanks!

Possibly, but it depends on how the reverse side of the fabric looks. You will be using both sides of the fabric for this costume, so if it's shiny or darker than the right side, then it will be useless.
I suggest ordering a swatch to check.
I also wouldn't like a fabric that's too soft, as it should have some stiffness to it to mimic true pig's skin. (What was used on screen).

Honestly, when I researched it I found no fake suedes I was happy with due to the reverse sides being dark and shiny, so I ended up going with the real thing.

That makes sense, I'm just really nervous about working with leather, since it's much less forgiving than cloth. Plus, I'm not sure about fitting it properly and still being able to get it on and off - that's going to take some experimentation to work for my body type (very busty with a fairly narrow waist).

As far as options available locally, this might be an option for suede... Do you think the taupe would meet standards?

Sorry to ask so many questions - I'm planning a first build and am not sure how strict color/texture need to be matched, and don't want to sink a bunch of money into something that won't be approved.

To my eyes, taupe looks like it would work, as long as the back of it isn't shiny.

The taupe looks like it would work. My pig skin was undyed, which is what I'd recommend as it truly mimics the screen used one. Smile But I think the taupe looks good from what I can see.

I'll admit it was more nerve racking working with the pig skin and also harder, because I couldn't use needles, so I spend a lot of time working on my mock up first.

Regardless of what material you end up using, I'd suggest putting in an invisible zipper in the back. I didn't and it made it quite fun getting in and out of my leather costume. Razz Rolling Eyes (Don't worry, it got easier after a couple of uses when the leather gave a bit).

A plus to the pig skin; I could cut the thin leather cords needed for the X stitching along the princess seams and top shoulder from my hides, getting a perfect match.

I used faux moleskin for mine. It has a much better drape than the micro suede, but the microsuede is still approvable Smile

One tip to working with leather like pig-skin, since you can't use pins to hold it together, is holding things together with masking tape. You can sew right through it and then easily rip it away without leaving a residue afterwards. Leather is scarier, but turns out looking great.
