Hey fellow Canadians!

Just joined these boards recently in hopes to gain more insight, and meet some folks to chat w/, about Jedi costuming, and protagonist stuff in general.

I come here by way of lightsaber building. Been toying w/ them on and off for a year or so, and decided that they should be more than just mantle pieces. I'm currently working on my Generic Jedi outfit. Won't really be able to do face characters so well due to large beard and lots of tattoos, so I'll keep it Generic.

So, anyone have any links or hints on where to find good fabric in the Toronto area for Jedi Robes?

thanks,
-jason

Thanks TJ! Any suggestions on specific materials, especially for tunics and robes?

One fun little bit is that I don't wear wool, leather, or silk, so that's been making it interesting. I did grab some cheapy Funtasma boots that I'm planning to weather as pandatrooper did here: http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32789

I used linen for mine and it turned out pretty good.

Terry's boot weathering tutorial is fantastic. I used that method and my boots look great.

Welcome Jason!

Agreed with Andrew, linen or fabrics that look like linen or other natural woven fabrics look best for the tunic. Recommend a fabric that looks like wool knit or felt for the robe.

I'm going to look at cottons and linens, particularly the looser woven materials to layer up.

I also grabbed some cork material to play around w/ for a non-leather, but sustainable, Style 2 belt. Should get some pics next week of what I've got going on.

Where's the best place to do "here's my outfit progress" threads?

thanks everyone!

the best place for your WIP thread, is here: http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21

-====-

re: wool robe, its sort of an 'optional' item -- you don't actually need one to be approved.

ie: you need 3/4 of the following: robe; food pellets; belt pouches; inner tunic.

(so basically : as long as you have food pellets, belt pouches, and inner tunic..
..then you don't need the wool robe) Wink

-====-

for tunic fabrics,

Dharma trading makes the original screen-used obi-wan fabric.

it has a VERY loose weave.

http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/cotton/handwoven-natural-fabric-55-inch.html?lnav=fabric_cotton.html

^^ this stuff makes a great tunic.

they also make a 'heavy-weight' version of the same:
http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/handspun-handwoven-natural-fabric.html
(most people choose the lightweight version).

-====-

a lot of people also use 'crinkle cotton gauze' to make the OT -- this is actually the material used in obi-wan's inner tunic.

see here: http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/29200000/Obi-Wan-Kenobi-obi-wan-kenobi-29218268-1669-2560.jpg
(you can see the difference in the weave between his inner and outer tunic -- the inner tunic is "crinkle cotton gauze").

this "gauze" fabric works OK , but if you use it for an outer tunic,
then you will definitely need to "line" the tunic with something sturdy.

(you can find the 'crinkle cotton gauze' practically everywhere).

The fabric depends on the character. If you are replicating a face character, you need to carefully look at the costume requirements and then choose similar fabrics to those used in the films. If you are working on a generic background Jedi, then there is more freedom, but you should stick to the range of fabrics that we have seen on camera such as raw silk noil, cotton, linen, and the like. King Textiles (Queen and Spadina) has great selection due to their size (2 stories) and the prices are fairly reasonable. There are other fabric shops on Queen just west of Spadina you may have luck with also. Spend a Saturday and hit them all.

Wow, what a great welcome!

I know that robe is one of the 4, but really, when most people think Jedi, they think of the robe Smile

Sizing question for you folks. I'm 6'1" and ~230 pounds (so not a small dude) and want to do a belt like ObiWan in ANH (Tandy blank belt buckle style), and wonder if 2" is the right size for belt and buckle. I've seen lots of folks use the 1.5" buckle, but that certainly seems too small for my build.

Should I take these sorts of questions over to my WIP thread (aka start one)?

You definitely want to start a peer-review build thread in the Jedi section and ask your questions there.

So, do Toronto folks ever meetup, or is it generally at FanExpo and ComicCon that they get together?

I'm certainly interested in actually meeting people in the RL in the area.
