After doing a bit of research, I had a few questions regarding the surcoat for the gown.

Many people I have seen have gotten the burnout fabric, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, in any shade. All the links I've managed to come across are dead! Does it have to be the exact burnout pattern or is something similar suitable?

Thanks in advance!

I've seen the exact pattern can still be found, but you have to dye it yourself. Of course, it's also possible to do the burnout pattern yourself, but it's a lot of fabric.

I heard that a particular store in Los Angeles was carrying the exact pattern in white and gray a while ago, but they didn't have a web site. You could ask Celestia Delegation if it's still there.

Thank you! I will PM her. Ideally, I would love to be able just to dye it, though I'm prepared to have to do the burnout myself if I must. Putting the ol' college education to use, I suppose!

Which reminds me of another thing. The Costuming a Galaxy book states that Padme's actual gown is made of "taffeta" which is sort of a vague term that doesn't give me fiber content or anything. I'm assuming they used a silk taffeta, but I did find a silk dupioni in the shade of her gown. If I'm unable to find actual taffeta in that shade, would the dupioni be an acceptable alternative? They'd be relatively similar in look - both are crisp, but the difference is that taffeta is smoother, and dupioni has slubbing in the weave.

What's most important is the look of the fabric in the end, not the actual material. If you can find a matte silk or silk-like fabric in the correct color, you should be good.

I think dupioni would have too much texture for this dress, but it's great for black invasion. But yeah, it's all about the final look of the thing.

I have found that dupioni made in Asia (Indonesia, etc.) actually is quite smooth and flat, so that could work, but it's pretty expensive to get.
