Hi all!

I知 putting together a Twi値ek generic jedi costume! I figured I壇 have questions along the way and am hoping to get feedback from you fabulous, experienced folks.

I have ordered lekku and ear cones from Twi値ek Pam, I found a cool headwrap for the lekku, and I have ordered a few body paint colors to try. I知 torn between turquoise, purple, and green. So that takes care of the Twi値ek specific stuff I already have too many pairs of black leggings, I've ordered boots, and I've ordered food capsules. WHOOO, I am on my way!

I have changed robe ideas a couple of times, but I am finally really happy with something! I have decided to go for a color scheme similar to photos I've seen of jedi healer Barriss Offee: black, dark gray, and gray-blue. I thought it would be fun to somewhat model myself after a known healer because I知 a veterinarian in real life. I figure that medicine would probably be what I壇 choose in my jedi life too.

I知 waiting to hear back from someone on the forum about robes, so I値l hold off on robe questions until I hear back from them. Smile

I do have belt and pouch questions though! Where are folks purchasing belts these days? I found a shop on Etsy and was considering ordering this:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/264383802/custom-black-leather-star-wars-inspired?ref=related-2
Does that look acceptable? This shop also makes belt pouches so I壇 consider buying those as well as long as they can be made in black. I知 a shorter gal at 54, so I was thinking of asking the shop owner if the belt could be made 2 instead of 2.25 to fit me a bit more proportionally.

Does anyone have experience with this shop? Do you have other recommendations for belt/pouch shopping?

I found an awesome template to color via the step by step approval process thread. I did draw in some edits so that the template is a Twi値ek. No disrespect to the original artist at all, just wanted to see how it would look with the added body paint colors and accessories. Here it is, feel free to let me know what you think.

Have a great weekend!
Ashley

Hello Ashley,
welcome at the twilek crew!
You will be one of the few male twileks.

I like your colour concept.
I would recommend to do the belt/pouches by yourself. Its not hard to learn. You only need an awl, the right thread and a needle. You can adept it the size you like and you can make big pouches.

yours
Leroni

Haha, no worries!

I was looking into Tandy Leather's sew-your-own belt pouches and saw that they only come in brown. I'd have to dye them to match my belt but I'm sure it can be done. The belt boxes might be fairly inexpensive if I buy them with my belt from the Etsy page I linked above. Probably not that much more expensive than buying all the supplies and tools needed to make my own...

Spent some time googling different fabrics today. I think I'll go with linen...
Here are some linen colors that I found online! Smile I really love the way they look together!

Yay! My boots arrived and they fit great! I struggle with boots because I have small calves and knee-high boots usually flop around my legs a bit. These are now the best fitting pair of boots that I own!

Hopefully they are approvable as they are, but if needed I can remove the ankle straps.

I JUST finished my belt and pouches, and I can honestly say that it isn't that much more expensive to buy a finished one. I just did a running tally and realized that the belt and pouches cost me $103 in materials to make... However, I decided to make my own because I had many of the items required already, so I figured I may as well dip into my 'craft stash'.

Thanks for letting me know! I am really hesitant to buy a bunch of tools and stuff that is just going to end up lying around my garage forever.

I did end up buying a belt and belt pouches from the same person, and I think the price was extremely fair. I ended up asking for a 2" belt since I'm a shorty.

I'm going to be starting my muslin mock-up of my robes this evening! Smile

I made some good progress this week.

Thanks to Aziara I found Azalea's Dolls and played around with it a bit. I was really starting to lean toward a turquoise twilek and thought that I was decided on a black/gray/slate blue color scheme. Well, the doll maker really helped me "try-on" different color schemes and body paint colors and I changed my mind. I'm going with purple body paint, and swapping out the slate blue for purple for my tabbards/obi as well. I really like this sleek look, so that's what I'm going for! My purple fabric is similar to other purples that I've seen OK'd on the forum. It's a very deep shade.

I made a mock-up out of muslin and a bit of cheap brown cotton. I'm hoping that you guys can give me feedback. Like I mentioned before, I am going for a sleek mini-dress type of look. I found a vintage wrap dress pattern, made it, and added a 1.25" binding. The cut of the dress works well with my body shape and it doesn't get all bunchy in the obi region.

My specific questions:
1. Are the tabbards an OK width at the shoulder? (There are some areas that look narrower than others below the obi because I was too lazy to iron and press out all the seams)
2. Is my obi an OK width?
3. Should I increase the width of the inner tunic neck binding? It doesn't stick out much past the outer tunic neck binding. Does it need to stick out more?
4. Any other suggestions?

Things that will definitely be fixed for the real version:
1. The thread will match the fabric. I already had a black bobbin all wound up and ready to go. Winding 3 new bobbins just seemed like TOO MUCH WORK before I started the mockup.
2. The fabric will be pressed. Too lazy, didn't iron (TL;DI)
3. Attachments will be with velcro and snaps instead of pins Smile
4. My sleeves will be a bit longer.

Other things in progress: my lekku and ear cones are here, and they are 70% painted. I ran out of paint (FAIL) so I'm waiting on more to arrive. They are a beautiful vibrant purple.

Things I'm still waiting on: my belt, belt pouches, and my cloak.

Very nice! If the judges ok that tunic, I'll go hunt up that pattern. It's definitely sleeker than the average jedi tunic.

Thanks! The sleek look is perfect for our alien shenanigans Smile
I hope the judges think it's ok!

I got the pattern on etsy! Beware the vintage sizing, I had to buy like 2-3 sizes larger than what my usual size is.

Answer to questions 1-3...
yes...
the tabards and obi look fine...
and
a lot of people only have a hint of the inner tunic showing...

Purple is fine ...again...as long as it is a muted shade...

Some odds and ends that judges look for:

Outer tunics should be long enough to completely cover the butt...mid thigh is generally best.

Outer tunic sleeves should be long enough to touch your knuckles and have a good amount of "volume".

Tabards should extend in the front to past the outer tunic hem...

In the back, tabards can end behind the Obi/sash (like Obi-Wan) or go past the hem in the back also (like Qui-Gon).

Proper Jedi robes should have lots of "volume"...
the hood should be huge...as in when the hood is down - it should just about touch your waist...
when the hood is up - the sides should "pool" on the shoulders...

Robes should be long enough that they are just about an inch off the ground.

hope that helps...

Thanks for the reply Phyllis!

Since I am doing a sleeveless outer tunic, is it ok that my inner tunic sleeves are wrist length and more fitted?
