Hi all

I´m about to start my WIP on the olive dress, though I do have two questions for the costume mentors please. Being danish it´s not always easy to understand the CRL´s.

1) "The neck and sleeve edges are trimmed in narrow cord in an olive green silk or silk-like fabric."

What does that mean ?

2) "The sleeves are lined in an iridescent lavender/green silk or silk-like fabric in a medium diamond pattern (lavender/green cross-dye preferred)"

It appears, that this fabric is impossible to optain, may I use a lavender silk/silk-like fabric and draw the pattern on with a green textil marker ??

Thanks in advance Wink

Hi! Great to see you on the boards.

First question: it sounds and looks like piping to me, where you fold some olive green silk (or silk-like) around a thin cord, and sew the raw edges into the seam between the velvet and the lining. You can see the rounded edging on the sleeves in this photo: http://www.padawansguide.com/fidm/maggie/green1.jpg It's a little harder to see it on the collar.

Here is a tutorial on piping: http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2012/01/sewing-tips-how-to-make-use-piping.html

Second question: In practice, yes, I think that would work, you just need to be very careful with how neat your hand-drawn diamonds look, and how the marker color looks on the fabric.

Also in the realm of close-enough, I feel, would be a lavender diamond fabric that isn't iradescent, or a fabric that is the right color and has a similar geometric shape, but isn't diamonds.

I think something like this, dyed the right color, could work: http://www.nippori-tomato.com/onlineshop/products/detail.php?product_id=5631

It would be good to get some other opinions on this too from the other judges.

Hi

Thank you so much - that helped me a lot, I was wondering, if it was like that regarding the cord Wink thanks for the tutorial.

I would make a cut-out pattern and use that, something similar as to my Visas Marr outerdress. Uhh I´m not good at chinese, but if a pattern like that would be acceptable, I have found something that looks like it.

Yes please if more judges would chime in, that would be nice.

As long as the lining was the correct color, I would be fine with a pattern fabric like the one posted.

Hi

So, I´ve found this one, would that be okay if I use a green fabric marker on the pattern ?

or a bit darker :

It's piping cord or tittebånd in Danish. Smile

As for coloring some yourself, I think doing purple over green would work better. Either with meticulus drawing the pattern or through the use of a stamp.
I know a replica of the sleeve lining was on spoonflower once. Is it no longer there?
Personally I would prefer a diamond shape to the pattern, but something very close to it could also work. The colors and how they mix is the most important thing.

No sadly I can´t find the fabric on Spoonflower.

So, if I don´t want to do the coloring and pattern - is the fabric that I´ve found a no go or would it be acceptable ?

I really want to get this project of the ground... Wink

Damn. It has probably been removed then. Too bad. Neutral

It looks good, but I'm unsure about the colors.

Great idea. Smile Colors can be very hard to judge on a screen.

Looking forward to seeing this come together. I love this dress, it's one of my future projects too. Smile

I am also looking forward to seeing if this works, I want to do this dress so bad, but the fabric made me put it on the back burner.

I´m still waiting for the sample for the fabric to the inner sleeves - but as soon as it arrives, I´ll ask the judges if it is "good" enough. It´s very hard to find the right fabric for this dress - but I´m not giving up Wink

Hopefully I will get it done for the premiere in December

Finally got the fabric sample from China - but sadly that one will not work for the inside on the sleeves.

I´ll search some more...
