Thought I might post some of the progress so far with our TFA X-wing suits. Two suits made so far, still working on our blasters and waiting to see about buckets.

My belt/harness:

The suit:

The Hof at the movie premier, Dec.17th:

Me, in "off-duty/briefing" look (in need of a rank badge then!):

Me & Matt... this first vest courtesy Michael Smith/"Strongbow". I have our own vests coming together slowly.... then blasters, and hopefully buckets soon.

Awesome! Very Happy

Which fabric did you use for your flight suits?

Thank you! Its getting there.....

I found this initially at JoAnn's:
http://www.joann.com/outdoor-fabric--solarium-solar-cherry/1887850.html

It looks like this up close, in normal light:

JoAnn has had in in-store or online for $21.99/yard, but I was utilizing their 60% off coupons when I got some.... Fabric.com also has it regular for just under $9/yard:
https://www.fabric.com/buy/ug-619/richloom-solar-outdoor-solid-cherry?cm_vc=756b1813-cbc1-43b3-84bd-29889bf8fb7b

Here's a comparison with the screen-used color, Solar Cherry, and some rather close 7-oz twill that some have used.... I think that overall, the Solar Cherry is closest, and seems to match the fabric type really close based on reports from those that have handled it (possibly a Cordura nylon).

Too red, you might say? Watch the movie again, and watch all the pilots scurrying around the base.... in that light, they look almost B-wing red!

Hmmmm.... This is very interesting.

I actually looked at that fabric at Joanne's locally, but it was marked "olefin", and I wasn't sure I wanted to wear upholstery fabric down here in the land of DragonCon... also concerned about skin irritation. I *did* really like the color and spied it at a distance.

I might have to get a sample then.

I've also ordered the pantone swatch to help with color matching and some cotton duck samples, but they haven't arrived yet.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Smile

[Edit P.S. I know the 7 oz. of which you speak... I think I found the last 3/4 yard remaining in Atlanta.]

Sorry to double post, but I've been thinking about this... If you were attending an all day con, how would you feel about wearing that fabric without being able to change after a few hours?

I want to try to get (at least) the briefing version together for DragonCon, and with Bespin being the host base, I usually put in some long hours.

I really appreciate your thoughts, because you are the first people I've "talked" to that have actually worn the solar cherry, not just in theory. Very Happy

If I can make it work, obviously I would like to go for the more screen accurate look.

It was warm for the couple hours I had mine on. I've got a five hour troop this weekend and Indiana Comic Con next month, so I'll let you know how it feels after that.

I'm intending on wearing it for the D*C parade regardless. I could stand to lose a couple pounds anyway Wink

No problem, Karyn.
I hear ya, the heat might make this suit somewhat uncomfortable, but as long as you make it baggy on you, and you wear something like cotton long underwear with it, if you sweat it will actually create a cooling barrier and help keep your suit from getting soaked as well (a trick I learned in historical reenacting). Personally, I've worn the suit for about 6 hours max, and I was OK... granted, it was December up here and freezing out, so that helped cool off while jumping from car to theater to car again!

My only issue with the fabric here is that the costume designer has clearly stated he used natural fabrics for the resistance costumes. So far I haven't seen anything from a display giving info on the pilot costumes like there was on the other costumes at Celebration, unfortunately.

We have it on good authority that the flight suits were indeed synthetic... and if you look at the closeup photos from the Times Sq exhibit, you can see the synthetic sheen in it:

What I think they meant was all the OTHER uniforms, and it's clear that the officers and other personnel wore wools, cotton, and linens.
