To my eye, it looks like there are three different fabrics in play:
http://www.padawansguide.com/amidala/redinvasion/red_invasion_closeup1.jpg

The neck/top collar is definitely different and has all that embroidery. It's got a completely different weave and sheen to it.

There's the grosgrain/corded silk that you can see in that shot down in the lower corners of the pic.

The tabbard down the front has a more coarse weave than the top collar and doesn't appear to be corded.

Blah.

As much as I love this dress, I am really torn as to if it's worth putting this much money into a costume that I won't be able to wear very much.

I totally understand you. I've put off the travel gown because of the cost and time, but now I feel that if I am ever to make it I need to do it now, or else it will never happen.

Good luck, your bun looks better than I ever managed to get my hair when I was trying to do the battle outfit.

I have recieved dye test swatches now from a company that offers all kinds of silks and velvet to be dyed.

I'm thinking about ordering the one called damson purple for my travel gown, the violett is also nice, but I think it will be a tad too blue on the velvet. A problem is that I can't order a test swatch of the exact fabric, since they don't do dyeing on less than 10 meters for these colours.

Any opinions?

I think the hair would look better if you would use an extension, to make it look fuller.

That's what I did with mine. I can't really help with how to make one since I didn't make mine, but what I did was use my own hair for the top and then the piece a friend made for the bottom.

She made a 2nd one since it wasn't staying in right and it was a little long and it kept hitting the collar which made it a little uncomfortable. But this is the 1st one: http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss83/allycat6247/Costumes/Padme%20Battle%20Costume/back.jpg

forgive me if this has already been touched on, but is there a consensus on whether ALL of Queen Amidala's nails are painted white, or just the thumbs?? Been wondering, and have never been sure.
Thanks! Smile

Which costume/gown?

After looking at SWFFAQ, they usually look all painted, but not always...

I was thinking in general...for now the Red Invasion, and Black Decoy...others will follow but wondered for the "authentic" look. Smile

The visual dictionary says that it was just the thumb, and that's where the idea came from that it was just the thumb painted white. However, they are known to make up a lot of stuff that doesn't really make sense. I'd go with all the nails painted white. Just so you know, either way you choose to do it will be okay with the standards because the standards don't mention nail color. Wink

Edit for pictures (copy and paste) I'm pretty certain you can see white polish on her other fingernails in this image: http://www.padawansguide.com/amidala/redinvasion/factfile1.jpg

And this (from the set, so she is in full costume) definitely looks like all the fingernails are white: http://www.padawansguide.com/amidala/coruscant1/bts4.jpg
