That is weirdness. Traditionally, a nude bra would be used, but you're right, I can't see the red. However, I really don't think I'm going to try it, because I'm paranoid like that, lol.

I once wore red underwear under mine (honestly because I forgot to pack my whites) and you couldn't tell at all. But for my bra I use the stick on backless one....it works out well to have that galactic underwear doesn't exist look without going sans bra.

I'm working on a senatorial Leia gown and I'm wondering if the sleeves should be reglan type. Is it acceptable to have the sleeves with no seams at all (except on the bottom of sleeve)?

Actually, it is preferred that you have no seam on the sleeve but if you check the standards, raglan is acceptable but only to get the length you need b/c if you use standard 45 inch width fabric, if your arms are long, the sleeves will not be long enough.

Another thing that has been suggested, if your fabric isn't wide enough is to fold the fabric the other way and give the dress a waist seam, since it'll be hidden under the belt anyway. That way you can have the movie canon look of no shoulder seams while still having long enough sleeves.

I used the waist seam method for mine, and it worked great Smile

Sometimes it's great being shorter than average.

I find that when I wear a bra, I get way too much of an effect on my chest. I'm a C/D cup and at 5'10", no where near Leia's measurements... I've been going with a bra and a slip on underneath. With a lined gown, it makes it more comfortable to not have the polyester rubbing against me too. I think I'm going to have to find some sort of strapping to get the girls down a little if you catch my drift...

My first dress has raglan sleeves but I'm trying to work a new gown that's accurate. I have very long arms so it's been difficult trying to get fabric the right size. For those of you who have done this method, would you go into more detail on how you set up the fabric?

I plan on putting together a tutorial on how I did mine with the waist seam, but I haven't had the time to put it together yet.

This thread has been going for a while, I can't remember if the photos I took of the dress details from the exhibit were ever posted?

DETAILED EXHIBIT PHOTOS:
http://imageevent.com/kay_dee/swwsmi/princessleiar2d2c3p0

You can see the eye hooks, the seam on the top of the collar, the dress hem, everything.

Hem:
The dress is two layers, and the hem is blind hand stitched with thin white thread after it's folded under to only catch the inner layer of the dress so as not to show any stitching from the outside. The straight machine stitch seen is to just line up the two layers of the dress and merge them into one (like flatlining) before the hem is folded and sewn. If that makes sense.

Look carefully at the high res photo and you'll not only see the straight machine stitch, but the blind hand stitch hem above it which is actually what holds the hem in place, not the straight machine stitch:

Kathy, your images are wonderful! I don't think I've ever seen such detailed pictures of the hem.

I deviated from the original when it came to my hem. I didn't think that the hem would be super noticeable, so I just sewed mine inside with the side seams before I attached it to the top portion of the dress. I debated whether I wanted to 100% accurate, or make it easier on myself and also cut down on the risk of getting the hem caught in something and snagged. Confused So, I did it the "easy" way.

Oh, your dress looks great Rachel! I would never expect people to get hung up on the hem accuracy at all. It's more for informational purposes that I took the photos and posted them Smile (since I skimmed back a page or two and saw the topic and mention of the hem come up) . I've had them up on my photo hosting site for a long time, but I don't think Padawan's Guide ever linked to them (I know Maggie is busy).

I love your DAG exhibit photos, Kathy. They're helping me with my AOTC cut scene Senate gown (especially the touch wall photos), they've helped me with Youngling costumes, Padme's aqua Georgette gown, and they've even helped me help a Jocasta Nu costumer in Michigan figure out the do dads that hang off her belt. Smile
