Yeah I know!!! I popped into Walmart this afternoon and tried them on and they are very comfortable and run true to size. I'll be getting a pair as soon as I have the funds. Right now I'm going to order the fabric. I'm buying 2 yards, which should be enough, and that runs to $34 after shipping from Canada to North Carolina, just to give you guys an idea, which, for wool is a great deal!

Okay, so after searching through Simplicity patterns, I found two that could work, however, the princess seams on the back of both will have to be deeper. What do you guys think? Which one do you like better?

I like the first one you linked and think the collar part is closer, though it might need to be a smidge longer.

Yeah, that's the one I liked best too, and the collar won't be too hard to alter!

I got my fabric in and I am VERY happy with it! It's a grey blue herringbone, and it really is quite similar to the film!

I also got shots back from my first version of this costume back, and I'm even more motivated to make the second version even better!

Your costume looks really good JediJainaSolo
Great pick on fabric. I saw that had the fabric again for about $6.00 a yard. That's a pretty good price.

Do you have any suggestions on how to go about making the pattern or do you happen to have a digital versions of it?
Thank you for posting your notes on the what pattern brand and number, just all sorts of images and notes.
Very helpful.

I'm waiting on some $$ to come in and then I think I might invest in a pattern. When I do, I'll post images of how I work with it step by step!

Actually, that was quite helpful. I went back and looked at the images of Rey's gauntlets that I had and discovered that the scalloped bottom, which some people thought were knit or crocheted is actually felt. The rest of the gauntlet is definitely the same material as the vest, but the bottom is attached. You can see clearly in these two images where it is attached. You can also clearly see in the second photo below that the fabric is felt, not knitting or crochet!

It was in looking at your version and how the felt fabric was falling that made me go back and look, so THANK YOU!!!

Also, what did you do for a pattern? That seems to be the hot question right now lol!

Okay, as I wait for the wool to dry (felting was a good call, so far it looks fantastic!) I've got some time to show you guys the mock up and tell you what I did so far.

So I ended up using a pattern I had on hand for my Mustafar Padme Burda Style 6958. I used the front of style A, and the back of style B, which for the most part worked really well! I did have to modify the back so the "upside down j" was the correct shape and depth. It took a few pieces of felt until I got it looking right. From there I just adjusted the whole thing to the shape I wanted on my dress form. I had my form set to my size before I got pregnant, as I want to be able to wear this in the fall. When I go to cut the actual fabric, I will still have to adjust the "J" to be lower, as you can see the shoulder pad I pinned on doesn't fall in quite the right spot. The collar will need some slight adjusting as well, and I want to make the shoulder wider to accommodate the pads, but overall, these are slight adjustments. For the preplum, I just eyeballed it, and it worked, wish I could be more specific! I haven't mocked the gauntlets yet, but I'll post photos when I do. Please excuse the look of the mock up, It's only pinned right now as I plan to use the pieces as my template. I hope that helps someone!!!

After much blood (yeah literally, I stabbed myself with the seam ripper a few times!), sweat, and tears, my vest is FINALLY done!

I thought I had finished it Sunday, but after staring at it for hours and looking at more photos, I realized how wrong I was. Here is what it looked like before I fixed it:

The shape was all wrong, the stitching not right, and the shoulder pads too tight looking. I took the whole thing apart and took in the sides and fixed the shape of the preplum. Then I went back and corrected the blanket stitching, which far improved the look. I know it looks a wee bit light, but I know lighter grey than the fabric, and this was the closest embroidery floss that I could find.

Then I adjusted the shoulder pads. Here is how I achieved the look, which I hope will help others!

First I cut out four pieces, two for each pad, then on two, I drew where I needed the quilting to go. Next I threw it in the machine using red thread and a basting stitch which I removed later.

Next, I sewed the two pieces together, added the batting, then pinned in place so that nothing moved. Then I went back to my grey thread and stitched over the red basting stitching. When I was all done, I removed the basting. After I was done, I placed and pinned down the pads. I stitched the top edge in the machine and stitched over the quilting once more to get the correct raised look.

Here is the finished vest!

Now I'm attempting to felt the remaining fabric for the gauntlets, so wish me luck!
