Well...
honestly..
I don't want to go down the road about "color of this or that" anymore...lol..
we have already established that you can't tell the true color of anything looking at screen captures...

on the photos taken outside the goggles have a yellow/amber color..
I can only hope for more accurate photos in the book "The Making of The Empire Strikes Back" when it comes out in October..

and only can say to everyone to check the standards first...

not after you have completed your item..

Wink

and as someone who actually did skiing in the 1970's...I can honestly tell you that yellow was a common color...
as a matter of fact..
my ski goggles in those days were yellow..
green was not a color that I recall seeing "back in the day"..

Wink

Yikes....I tinted mine green. I can change it....do they sell amber tinting film at like an AutoZone or somewhere? I just used that tinting film.

I STILL think some of those goggles in the film are GREEN....but that's just me.

Thanks!

While I agree with you, and have argued that point --a lot -- in the LCJ forum, the decision has stood to keep it at amber. I'm still looking for a correct lens material myself in order to finish my costume.

Personally, I see it in the same light as the white/grey argument about RFT helmets... but that's the decision that has been laid out. I'm hoping that either better pictures do come out, or an easier source for yellow lenses presents itself. And I personally prefer the anonymity that a darker lens provides, vs. a fully see-through lens, but that's me.

But until the standards change (assuming that some new pic lends more credibility for the green), we have to go with them as is.

The lens color is green because they are using a blue filter on the lighting for the scene where that picture was taken (yellow + blue = green).

Repeating for the millionth time: Lighting in the movies can change the color of the costumes. Especially when they are light-colored like they are here.

It's the fine line between what we see on the screen and what the item is in real life. Han's Hoth coat was brown but looks blue in the movie because of the lighting. So which is "correct"?

That's my point, Donna. I fall under the camp of "go with what is seen onscreen", regarding the Hoth trooper. I agree with the white RFT helmet, but I'm fine if folks want to go grey. You, and others fall under the other camp, grey RFT buckets and yellow lenses.

As of now, the standards hold as yellow lenses, but we allow grey or white RFT buckets (with the caviat that it's best to go with your local group standard). I personally like the idea of going for local uniformity --especially because there is such a strength in local uniformity. Global uniformity is also great, hence the primary standards that we all hold to.

"Which is correct?", you ask... Well, the standards are the standards and I will go with it --even if I disagree. It's a funny little way that we allow one bit of flexibility (grey/white) but don't with the lenses.

Is it a major sticking point? No. Is it a pain in the backside --for me it is. But if it is the standard, I will comply --because it's the standard. Do I like it? NO.

In the grand scheme of things, will a green or yellow lens make the difference from a fan saying "oh, that's not a Hoth Trooper, because his lens is green (or yellow)!" I seriously doubt it. It's only costume geeks and nerds like us that worry about such nuances.

Sometimes I am amazed at my own stupidity...

I forgot that I did have someone who worked on "The Empire Strikes Back" to ask about the color of the goggle lenses.....
I also forget that we are dealing with two distinct filming sites...
Norway and Elstree...

I e-mailed Richard who worked on the film at Elstree and asked what color his goggle lenses were...

His response was:

To try and answer your question . The goggles that I wore while filming at Elstree studios were definitely amber/brown . I have attached a photograph of me working with the Tauntaun. (I am on the left) However I have had a look at some stills of rebels on location in Norway and their goggles appear to be green .

Also find attached one of John Mollo's original designs for the costume where the goggles are clearly green. My best guess would be that the goggles may have possibly been produced in more than one colour.

I hope the above information is of some help.

Best Wishes ,

Richard

Here is the original artwork from John Mollo that he attached

Where I can tell you for sure that some of the Hoth "goggled" personnel did have amber colored lenses...
it would appear that scenes filmed in Norway may indeed have had light green lenses...

also...of note...
is the artwork depicts the Hoth version of Luke...
the Hoth Trench Troopers filmed in Norway did not have the tan vest...

I really can't wrap my head around how much time that display took to make..

and how much $$ it took to make
when you consider all of the action figures, vehicles, and what not in there...

Thanks Phyllis! If I can find some way to tint my goggles amber between now and CV, I will, otherwise, I'm showing up with green. That's all I can do.

Also, where is the attached photo of Richard with the tauntaun? I didn't see it in your post....

Thanks for the info!

That's really nice and very appropriate since it seems a lot of people are working on that costume at the moment! Smile
