I really like Leia's deleted Scene Sandstorm gear. I have been very motivated to do this costume, and I'm finally starting to work on it.
I started by searching for a fabric similar in color and texture to that of the reference images, and these images here gave me a good idea of the fabric:
I went to Joann's searching for a fabric similar in color and texture to the sandstorm cloak, and chose this fabric- LUCKY FIND!!! The texture looks so close to the original!
Now, judging from the reference images: it looks like there are many elements of this cloak. First, you can clearly see an undershirt with a hood in this reference image:
And you can see the underhood again here:
So, it looks like the striped part of the cloak is attached to the undershirt, and there is a second cloak that is worn over the undershirt.
I've completed my undershirt and just have to sew on the striped brown cloak Then, I'll finish up the overcloak.

Thank you so much! I'm finishing up the last two stripes. I've got the hooded cloak almost finished too. This is great for covering up the bikini during a con! |

Update: I am still working on this
I've put the project on hold for now until my new Slave Leia is finished, then I will be resubmitting the new one. Then I will finish this after I resubmit my new Slave Leia. I'll also post a review thread for the bikini and all of its parts |

Ok, was going to stop at my fifth Han costume -Hoth, but now you have me thinking of doing sandstorm Han. I think I may have to start with a pair of those goggles since they look like they may be a very close match. _________________ Dave Turnbull

I didn't know that Sandstorm Leia was basically slave Leia with a robe and goggles. Neat!
I'll have to do this for Comicon in case they crank up the A/C. _________________ Dowager Queen Delegation Leader 2015-2017

Hey everyone- I've revisited my build and I'm almost finished!!!
I'll post more photos of my cloaks later, but here are my goggles so far:
Now, the goggles were a lucky find on Amazon. What I did for the mechanical pieces on the left side was I glued on some action figure blasters
Here is a great art reference for the goggles:

Action figure blasters! Poor action figures; no weapons anymore. _________________

Hahahah!! Take all their weapons!!
Here is my outfit, I want to get some more opinions when it comes to ironing it. I thought maybe I should leave it wrinkled since it was in the middle of a Tatooine Sandstorm, or I can iron it if that is preferred

It's great to finally see WIP photos of this!
First, I should apologize for not hopping in earlier and commenting on the goggles. When you look at both the drawing and the original shots, her goggles are much bigger, fully enclosing her eyes so that sand can't even get in on the bottom or sides. I think you'll need a new pair, or you will need to do some pretty substantial modifications to your current pair.
Your hood is a very good shape and color.
I do have some concerns about the wrap itself. First, it appears that you selected fabric colors and based your stripes on the drawing, not the original costume. Since we don't have a full turn-around of the drawing version of the costume, which is quite different in color, we cannot call it a second version of the costume and must rely on the original costume in the movie. Your base fabric needs to be a much lighter color with a much more prominent stripe.
My other concern is the weight and fullness of your fabric. To achieve the fullness of a cloak in the original (and the drawing) you really need at least twice as much fullness as you have, at least. Right now, yours looks very tight around you, and not an accurate representation of the original. It looks to me like you used some kind of cotton or linen as your fabric, and I think that is part of your problem with the fullness. The drape and weight of the original suggests a rather thick wool. If you found a perfectly patterned lighter fabric, you may be able to achieve the same weight by flat-lining onto an appropriately colored wool.
I hope that helps as you are trying to finish this up. _________________

Good to see some photos.
And now that I'm properly awake (and you have posted new photos) I'll try to give you some proper con crit rather than silly comments.
As Jenna said the goggles doesn't match the references. They need to be the size of classic skiing glasses in terms of how much of the face they cover. The entire eye area (with eyebrows) and most of the nose, too. But not actually skiing glasses as they are a completely different model.
Maybe you can mod your goggles as the glass portion looks to be a good size. Maybe some thin leather or rubber or somesuch that can be glued on to the edge of your goggles.
Then there's the cloak. I also agree with Jenna about the fullness. It seems to cling to you right now instead of hanging loosely. I also can't see that 'loop' the original has on the left side/front. (I don't know how else to describe it than calling it a loop. I hope you understand what I mean). But it should be entirely possible to fix that by adding more fabric to it.
Your stripes also have the wrong base color, I'm afraid. I've looked hard at the references and the base is a cream color with very light yellow and brown stripes. It's most clear in the mannequin image. Going all cream would probably be better than all yellow (as in the 'His eyesight returns') as the yellow easily becomes too prominent. Any way you can remove the yellow so you only have the thinner stripes of yellow on a cream base?
I hope this is helpful to you going forward with this build. It's always hard being a trail blazer and figuring out something that is so new (to us). Best of luck with it. _________________

Thanks Ladies! So here is a list of changes I need to make:
1. New, larger goggles
2. Heavier weight fabric
3. Cream colored stripes
As for wool- where are some good places or sites to buy wool? I've never worked with wool before so I just want to get the right type to use for this |

Honestly, I just scour the fabric shops for wool. The larger ones will have a selection all year around, while the smaller usually only have it during the autumn/winter season. Some times looking at upholstery fabric can be wise; you find a lot of wool there. Just be aware that they often tend to be very heavy, too. With these I'd really say you need to go into the store so you can see and feel the fabric before you buy. _________________

And if you find some online, always order a swatch before you make a big purchase. I sometimes have luck with fashion fabrics club and fabric.com. |
