|
|
|
Hiya all.
I've just been on a course in 3D printing and now I really want to use this to make all those greeblies.
A few greeblies have already been rendered by others; I've found a couple of commpads on thingiverse, but some things I couldn't find.
So today I used my time on the course trying my hand at making a 3D model of the code cylinders.
https://www.tinkercad.com/things/jXdYNY11yje-code-cylinder-for-star-wars-pilot-v1
Choose 'View 3D' to turn it around.
It's my first try at making a 3D model (ever). I haven't gotten a chance to print it yet, as it had a printing time of roughly 2 ½ hours, but it should be printed for me for the middle of next week and then I'll have to share a picture.
If the code cylinder turns out well I'm planning on sharing the stl file on thingiverse.
So, here's my questions to you guys.
1. Does anyone have the exact dimensions of the code cylinders? In millimeters, please. I work in mm in tinkercad.
2. Does anyone have the dimensions of other greeblies? I might try my hand at more than just the code cylinder.
3. Do any of you have any stl files to share? I think it would be great if you would share them here (direct links to an open source site would be fine).
4. Have any of you done any 3D printing of greeblies? If so, what are your experiences and what files can you recommend (or say we should avoid)?
I hope you'll join in the discussion and then I hope to soon have some news for you about that model.
Oh, and the site I use for modelling is free. [/list] _________________ DXO of Royalty & Senatorial detachment

Ask and ye shall receive!
Just took some calipers to one of my code cylinders and here's what I got. I also have a set of Kenny's cylinders, but these are from another seller (liked these because they are 1-piece aluminum).
The total height of the head appears to be 32mm. Entire length is 123mm.

3D printing seems to be a great thing for greeblies. All of my new B-wing pilot greeblies are 3D printed and they're looking pretty good so far. I've been rather pleased. I've been using TinkerCard as well.
Your code cylinder model is looking good so far! Just might want to check your rings again, it looks like a few of them aren't actually attached to anything are are just floating in the air. You might want to use cylinder objects rather than the flat ring objects so you wouldn't have to worry about the middle of them being wide enough to be attached to the model. _________________ B-wing Pilot - Jedi - Resistance X-wing Pilot - Temmin "Snap" Wexley

Thanks for the feedback, guys! That picture is great!
And yeah, it's my first try, so I'm far from done with tinkering. I need to tinker some more and then resend the file to the company, so I guess I'll be tinkering tomorrow.
I really needed a better picture to work with from what I had when I did my v1, so thanks many times for that. Though I may need to shoot whoever came up with those crazy dimensions.
I plan to make a duplicate of my current model, so I can see how the work progress from start to finish. No matter how it goes I'll be sending a file to the local company this week and then we'll see how well it turns out. _________________ DXO of Royalty & Senatorial detachment

MHG, what material do you print in? Mine will be printed in PLA. (As far as I'm aware).
Btw. I made a new model friday night (well, it was saturday to be honest), so here goes:
https://www.tinkercad.com/things/loRKrwd0WZc-code-cylinder-for-star-wars-pilot-v2
This is based on the dimensions wh1plash shared along with eyeballing it. The reference helped me a lot in spacing the rings.
Due to the measurements being as they are I had to round up or down to get something I could work with. I did the model work with everything twice as large as it should be, and then scaled it back down once I felt satisfied with the result. So it's not completely like the metal code cylinder, but it should be fairly close. Feedback is, of course, welcome.
The stl file has been sent to the firm and I've requested it be made in grey. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it goes well! _________________ DXO of Royalty & Senatorial detachment

I've been working in 123D Design.
I'm almost finished a chestbox, and I also made a special something that every X-Wing pilot needs and nobody has found the originals of (yet). _________________

As far as greeblies are concerned, check out http://www.shapeways.com/shops/gg4g. Lots there. _________________

The special item needs a bit more research so I can tweak it. _________________

Was it a cup holder that attaches to the chestbox? Every pilot should have one. _________________ B-wing Pilot - Jedi - Resistance X-wing Pilot - Temmin "Snap" Wexley

Uh, nice chestbox. You're way above my level of designing stuff.
And I've been told my model will be white, as they had already started the print when they saw my message about requesting grey. _________________ DXO of Royalty & Senatorial detachment

Thanks, I only installed the program on Thursday. I guess I found it easy to learn. _________________

I have rebuilt that chestbox multiple times now. I made it thinner and a lot less polygons. I am finally happy with it enough to get it printed. Should run around $50 depending on who I use.
If it is successful, I will open make it freely available to download. _________________
