All of us have seen the Celebration Scene at the end of "A New Hope".....
but some of us have poured over that scene a LOT more than others....

According to the book "The Making of Star Wars" on page 192 John Mollo (Costume Designer for the OT) stated that the scene was:

Not originally in the budget
The 250 extras that were originally needed swelled to 400
Nothing was made for the scene....it was all stock and found items.
It is probably the ONLY scene in the OT that you will see buttons

If you REALLY look at that scene...it is a comedy of errors...
The costume department literally took anything they had and threw it out there.

There are X-Wing pilots with no boots
RFTs with hats
RFTs with leg flares
and generally looks like they used anything that wasn't nailed down.

They also had to go and find additional costumes w/no time for changes...

according to Mollo....

"At Bermans, in boxes, we found something like 200 US Marine olive green stand ups, which we left well at the back because they had buttons on them. We also found 200 French Foreign Legion costumes, khaki jobs with collars, so we added hats, scarves and things. For Rebel generals, George came in with a still from "Once Upon a Time in the West" where they were all striding through the dust in Rangoon coats."

I have gone through several books and tried to glean what I could from the usual small and grainy photos.....
color is always questionable and the conclusion that I came up with is that there are 2 kinds of Junior Officers?
and 2 kinds of Senior Officers/Generals

Using the descriptions provided in "The Making Of Star Wars" and noting the general scramble for this scene...
I have come to the following conclusions:

Junior Officers??

Senior Officers/Generals

regarding the Junior Officers:

Junior Officer #2 - Required Items

Iconic Hat

Light tan scarf

Olive Drab non-nylon military belt with no holes

Tan/Dark Khaki tan jacket that has:
Side closure in front (like Imperial Officer)
Wide fold down collar that comes to a point
No buttons or zipper down the front
Epaulets on shoulder with a plain silver domed button
Belt loops on the side with a plain silver domed button
Two large cargo pockets below the belt with a plain pocket tab

Tan/Dark Khaki tan pants with no visible pockets.

Black shoes or boots
.

Junior Officer #1 - Required items:

Iconic hat

Olive drab or khaki non nylon military belt with metal grommet holes.

Olive drab/dark green jacket
2 upper pockets w/pleat and unique shaped pocket tab
2 larger lower pockets with no pleat and unique shaped pocket tab
Stand up collar
Epaulets on shoulder with no button
Plain black buttons above the belt line

Olive drab/dark green pants with no visible pockets

Black shoes/boots

Regarding the Senior Officers/Generals

General Dodonna:

Required Items:
1. Accurate khaki/tan jacket with brown shoulders (yoke) and four pockets in front
2. Dark brown shirt with bib in front
3. Khaki/tan pants with solid dark brown or black stripe on side of each leg
4. Brown belt with oval buckle- 1 3/4" to 2" wide
5. Brown tall boots (14-16 inch shaft), riding boots recommended

Required for Formal:
1. Rank badge
2. Hair, beard and moustache; appropriately styled. Prosthetics may be used

Optional:

1. Yavin Briefing: natural/cream colored duster, near ankle to mid-shin length, no buttons or pockets. Pointer

2. Control Room: uses formal requirements only

3. Celebration scene: natural/cream colored duster, near ankle to mid shin length, no buttons or pockets. Hero medals

So....with this stuff in mind....
I would like the help of all of our Rebel Legion members to find things I missed and things that I might have wrong so that we can make some long lasting Costume Standards for these costumes....

I'll have to pull a screencap when I get home, but there's one person wearing very chunky "KISS"/disco boots. Wink

Just FYI, Lab coats don't generally go past the knee. Butcher coats are longer and several people used them for Endor Troopers, but I haven't seen anything commercially available that is THAT long.

There is a stairway on the south end of the Anaheim Convention Center that might work for staging. Sunrider has taken pics there. I'll try to find them and post them here.

Great ideas, as usual, Phyllis. Smile

Hmmmmmmm, will we be using this for costume reference? It could be useful.........

This goes under the heading of crazy ideas, but have we ever thought about recreating this scene? Playing the music and having 'Luke', 'Han' and 'Chewie' walk down the aisle and get their medals?

The only place I can think of where there are enough of us together is a Celebration. And since there was so improvisation, we could fill out the ranks with the 501st members (as long as the stormies don't shoot anything Razz ).

And we could do the march at the end of The Phantom Menace (I wonder who would do Jar Jar?).

Just an idea.....

wow. pilots with no boots. LOTS of pilots with no boots.
more than we ever saw WITH boots, in this movie.

does this mean that the RL should make pilot boots 'optional' for ANH,
as ~MOST~ of the pilots seen on screen, have no boots?

(I mean, besides Luke, who else did we see actually WEAR boots?
maybe they are unique to Luke Skywalker?)

Shocked

this could be a variant costume: ANH "ceremony scene" pilot,
(since bootless pilots are CLEARLY 'canon' -- they should be allowed in the RL) Razz hehe

The 2 guys in the blue/gray jackets appear similar to the one who bring the medals up to the Princess:

started to flesh out some of the Costume requirements for these guys beginning with the "Junior Officers" (or what should we call them?)

Please review and see what needs to be added or clarified...I am not so good at writing standards...

I'm working on making a General Dodonna costume. I have worked up some standards if you would like to take a look at them.

Here is what I came up with for General Dodonna standards. I haven't written standards before, so please review these for any corrections needed. There is one thing I'm not sure of and that is pockets on the duster.

Required Items:
1. Accurate khaki/tan jacket with brown shoulders (yoke) and four pockets in front
2. Dark brown shirt with bib in front
3. Khaki/tan pants with solid dark brown or black stripe on side of each leg
4. Brown belt with oval buckle
5. Brown tall boots (14-16 inch shaft), riding boots recommended

Required for Formal:
1. Rank badge
2. Gray/white hair, beard and moustache; appropriately styled. Prosthetics may be used

Optional:
1. Yavin Briefing: natural/cream colored duster, near ankle to mid-shin length, no buttons or pockets. Pointer

2. Control Room: uses formal requirements only

3. Celebration scene: natural/cream colored duster, near ankle to mid shin length, no buttons or pockets. Hero medals
