Despite dodgy weather, an unusual timeslot and bitter cold, Ghost Base (along with our counterparts in Garrison Carida) succeeded in another deployment to the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. For the fifth year in a row, our troops brought smiles, fun and memories to the hundreds of dancers, support staff and (most importantly) kids and families at the 46-hour Penn State Panhellenic Dance Marathon, (affectionately known as THON).

THON is ayear-long effort by Penn State University students to raise money for pediatric cancer patients through the Four Diamonds Fund, which helps to cover expenses that their insurance does not. The highlight of the troop is always interacting with the Four Diamonds kids who are in attendance (who get to forget for a little while that they are cancer patients, and get to meet their favorite Star Wars characters!)

This year's troop was a departure for us, since we have traditionally appeared on Saturday afternoon. This year we appeared on Friday evening, as the FIRST entertainment act of the year. This turned out to be an advantage for us, since our timeslot was from 9:50pm-10:50pm, but since we were at the venue by 8:30 the Entertainment staff waived our 9:50 start and let us on the floor about 9:15. So we did get to have some additional time on the floor. The floor seemed a bit less crowded at this time (for whatever reason), and we got to interact with a LOT of Four Diamonds kids, as well as dancers, support staff, etc. Our appearance coincided with the Entertainment staff's "Space Theme" hour, which included various activities, crafts, games, etc. around the floor to keep the dancers (and kids) occupied as the marathon goes on.

At 10:50 the Entertainment staff came around and let us know it was time to leave the floor; we went back to our traditional space at the loading dock by the Entertainment entrance and got suited down, deciding to head over to Denny's for our post-troop meal. Though a few folks had to head out, quite a few came over to enjoy a late supper/early breakfast and post-troop debriefing. Around 1:00am, we headed out to our homes/crash spaces for the night.

Thanks to everyone who made it through the threat of bad weather, the cold, the late hour, etc., and made THON 2015 an unforgettable time for the dancers, for the support staff, and--most of all-- For The Kids!!

Received this note this morning from Cam and Kate:

Hello Tharren!

We wanted to thank you and the 501st/Rebel Legion for attending and performing at THON 2015! With your support we raised $13,026,653.23 for the Four Diamonds! It was a pleasure working with you all year long and throughout the THON 2015 weekend... we enjoyed watching you all perform and hope you had fun while doing so! Attached are some pictures that we wanted to share with you, feel free to forward them to anyone who you think will enjoy them! Again, thank you guys so much for everything... the kids and dancers loved you!

For the Kids,
Cameron Rowe and Kate Freeswick
