|This will be the 6th Annual Joliet Library Star Wars Day.
Last year's Joliet Library Star Wars Day attracted over 7,000 people in one day and there were 115 costumes from the 501st and the Rebel Legion.
PLEASE JOIN US THIS YEAR!!
We need more rebels!!
If you are full RL members, you can probably sign up here:
Also visit the Facebook page and note some of the Star Wars authors coming:
What started out in 2010 with 12 costumes and 600 visitors swelled in year #5 to 115 men, women, and kids in costume and over 7,000 visitors.
The event is the Joliet Library Star Wars Day. It began humbly as a way to get kids into the Library to teach them the joys of reading and to showcase all of the other things that Libraries now contain.
The event has grown so large that the City of Joliet blocks off streets and had many organizations clamoring to join in the fun. The event also needs two venues to showcase everything so the Joliet Historical Museum (one block away from the Library) offered their facility to help contain all of what is offered to see and do.
Where to begin?
First and foremost...the members of Nar Shaddaa Base would like to thank the members of Mos Espa and Dantooine Bases who traveled long distances to join us and help swell the ranks of the Rebellion at this event.
The event started the day before as members of Nar Shaddaa Base moved their display into the Joliet Historical Society which was home last year and this year to the Rebellion. The Empire is housed at the Joliet Library.
Here is some of the display set up by NSB:
As noted, many groups came on board to join in the festivities. One of the groups was the local American Legion Band. The Band wanted to participate, so the organizers decided to stage a parade from the Joliet Historical Museum to the Joliet Library.
Here is a video of that parade:
The entire group then marched to the front lawn of the Library for the group photo above.
NSB also attempted a group photo before the parade, but as you can imagine, there was mass chaos and not everyone got into the photo>
We then invited all Rebels in the area in on another photo:
One of the most loved parts of this event is the lightsaber demo given by two of NSB's Jedi. John Hartley and Nick Klein are not just Jedi, but swordsmen. Both last year and this year Nick and John have choreographed a lightsaber demo to the extreme delight of the visitors. The 3 shows are always standing room only. This year the lightsaber demo took on a serious note. Several weeks ago, one of our NSB members, Taggart Cline, passed away at age 40 from complications of diabetes.
The Joliet Historical Museum gave our Jedi swordsmen the opportunity to raise funds for the American Diabetes Assn in Taggart's memory. Our Jedi raised $100.00 and a check was sent to the American Diabetes Assn. the next day.
Here are some videos of the lightsaber demo:
Here is another angle of the demo with a special guest joining in at the end:
Many of our base Jedi were on hand to add to the atmosphere of the lightsaber demo.
One of our Jedi, Tim Jarmusz, also put together a display on lightsaber construction:
Also, our member Thomas "Crix" Turner brought along his Chewbacca in progress to show people what goes into making this costume.
And how can we forget NSB member Darryl Sorensen who is also a member of the R2 Builders and Road Squadron. Darryl brought along 2 of his droids in his custom trailer attached to his custom car. Darryl's longtime buddy R2-S5 also was sporting the new drink tray that Darryl just completed.
