I like hammered silver paint, i find the texture more interesting than regular when its not a big deal for accuracy sake.

cool...thanks for the input..
again..
I don't plan on this being an exact replica...and when you look at some of the screen captures of the screens at Echo Base, there are some differences...

I was even thinking about using parts of our Smugglers Moon Command Post insignia on the vid screen...

and...

I may have a friend who can help with the graphics on the vidscreen

Well....

I have finished the base of this piece and the side and top rails that hold the vidscreen

The piece has been painted in a hammered silver color

I finally got the lights in to put into those switch boxes that sit on the console...I intend to try to finish up the switch boxes this weekend.

The last thing is the biggest...
and that is the actual screen itself...

I have been experimenting around with taping and painting the screen on scrap pieces of plexi and
it is NOT going well....

No matter how careful you are with masking tape...there is some bleeding...but I have found that Frogtape gives the best results...

doing the straight lines is easy...
but..

the circles...
not so good...
again..
using scrap I laid down a square of masking tape...drew out one of the circles using a template onto the masking tape and then tried to carefully cut the tape along the line using a Xacto knife...
it comes out too wobbly for my taste...

so...
next I took the plans to a local sign dude...
he wants $300.00 to make and put the design on to the plexi...
and it will be done in vinyl...
told him I would have to think about that...
because it is a lot more money than I would like to spend
and..
I don't know how that vinyl will look from the back side...
the graphics should look good from both sides...
which would look best if done in paint...

so...

I am stuck at this point...

there is still the issue of lighting up the screen...
and..
as I have noted...
I am not sure which way to go on that...
I have looked into the led strip lights (not rope lights)...but locally I can only find the "warm white" and am really looking for BRIGHT white lights...

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...

Have you tried using Monokote, or similar?

The largest circle will need to be like 20" in diameter

eleni could cut it in vinyl on her cricut machine but it would probably have to be done in sections for something that size

Yes...someone else mentioned cricut...
but I think the max that those can do is 12"....
but...

certainly would love to have her cut the smaller ones...
let's see what I can find in the way of that Monokote today and I can maybe send you some for cutting smaller circles...

The issues you may have with monokote would be getting the air bubbles out from underneath it, and that it can also shrink (you have to heat it to activate the adhesive, and it also shrinks it down).

The best bet would be the strips of monokote that already have self adhesive on them. They are called "trim sheets" and are about 36 by 6. They are adhesive-backed (not heat activated), like stickers. The only issue is that the color choices are not nearly as many. Also, the 36 by 6 size, but you can get around that by doing the curves in sections.

Good luck! I hope it works out.

Well...I went to Walt's Hobbies and talked to the guys behind the counter...

they told me that the Monokote really won't work for the Vidscreen application because the way that it is used you actually shrink it with the heat gun to apply it...and he said that it really would not work well on plexiglass....

he did recommend vinyl appliques....

that is basically what the sign shop in town was going to use...

I am going to have to see if I can find sheet vinyl like that used in producing decals...

I did work on the switch panels for the console...
I still need to add some details to those...

by George....
I think I got it...

http://www.uscutter.com/ORACAL-631-Exhibition-Cal-Vinyl-24-x-10-Yard-Roll

I think that this could work..

now...
the important question...

What color...

personally...
I don't like the light blue that the original piece was made in...
I am guessing that they chose that color for purposes using with a green screen maybe...
or how it would translate in film...

I would prefer a white, light gray or possibly light yellow...

I am going to wait a few days before ordering and would love people to give their feedback..

I may be able to get some bright white LED strip lighting. what kind of footage are we looking at? were you just going for the top and bottom, or wrap all the way around? Give me some ideas of footage, and i'll see if this will work.

I would think any color would be better then white, if were going to light it with white light. I may be able to get a blue or green light in the strips too.

I keep looking at that Laser cut LED of the Rebel Bird that someone gave me at Discovery world...

The Rebel bird is laser cut into the Plexiglas and the red LED lights shine from below...
during the day and from most angles...you can not see that it is lit up at all...

I am beginning to think that trying to light up the vidscreen for daylight displays is a waste of time and money...
at this point, I honestly don't know what would make more sense as I have no reference.

Crix posted this to my FB Page:

I asked the person who posted it a few questions about this piece...
that plexi is supposed to have been laser cut with the design and obviously, they used a purple light...
the purple oddly shows up pretty good inside....however...that piece looks like it is sitting on the inside of a building...and far away from windows...
both the Joliet Historical Museum AND the Discovery World tent have large windows in the display areas...

I just don't know how to predict what will work best...
and I don't know if it would be any better to install lights all the way around or what...

I can tell you that the vidscreen is 56" wide by 36" tall...

i was wondering that myself. with the image laser or etched in the glass, it will show with the light, with decals on the outside of the glass, i dont know if it will show.

I don't have any idea either....and certainly I don't have the tools to laser cut this piece so decals are the only way to go...
that being said...
I am considering the white simply because I think it will show up pretty good in daylight and also reflect a colored light better...though I don't know that for sure...
I think a colored light would be better than just a white light at this point...
also..
when you think in terms of lightsabers...
red does not show up at all in daylight..
your best bets are green and yellow

I think I am going to order the vinyl in white
