The Annual Joliet Library Star Wars Day has been announced for 2015

As you all know...
NSB has excelled the past couple of years with our display at the Joliet Historical Musuem..we have rocked it ...
and that is thanks to all of you who supply display items, do table duty, and help set up and tear down...

This year I do plan to do a movie set piece...

a piece similar to this:

Starting in January, I will start making a "plan" on how to build this..

I have some ideas rolling around in my head...and will try to make a "blueprint".

Anyone who wishes to help in design and construction...
lmk...

I know that my first priority is to find a large piece of plexi or similar and the rest of the build will be made to fit said piece of plexi.

Also, I would like to "light up" the vid screen...got a few ideas on that...
and..
also have those "control panels" showing in the above photo have some light up and blinking buttons...

Then, to add as "set decoration" will be all of our Hoth costumes (Kathy, Steve, Beth and mine) on mannequins with other "Hoth gear" laying around. A backdrop of white/snow would also be cool...but...that is something I would have to really think about...or if anyone has ideas on that...

Beth...if you come, of course I would like your Toryn Farr...if you can't make it...please consider mailing me your costume.

So...stay tuned...and toss out all those ideas here..

Wink

Am going to check out this stuff at Home Depot..

I"ll put it on the calender, but can't make any promises. If I can't come, I will be sure to make sure the costume gets there.

and...

it's ON!!!

Today's trip to Homer Depot...

The plexi/acrylic sheet has a pookah in the corner...but that is ok...
I plan to cut it down from the 72" long that it currently is (it is 36" tall) down to 56" long

It is pretty nice and thick...thicker than I expected it to be...

and

sanded 1/4" plywood...I had the 4'x8' piece cut to 66" long so it would actually fit in the Jeep..
10' piece of 2" PVC
10" piece of 1.25" PVC
both thick walled...

And the first draft of the game plan

The bottom legs can be built in sections using 2 x 4's as a frame and frame then covered with the plywood.

The "table top" is kinda a trapezoid...that will need to be partially hollow for blinking lights on those panels...

the vid screen will be lit from above in the 2" PVC with either some long stick florescent lights...or possibly rope light...depends what I can find...

The pattern on the plexi will be both paint and car pinstriping...
color and design yet to be determined...it does not have to look like the previous one built...

So....
If possible...I would like to set up the first "build" date sometime next month....

start fleshing things out...

some of it can be built in pieces...
perhaps I can give Crix some $$ to purchase 2 x 4's to make the "stands"...

Stay tuned...

comments?

one that you know very well..

I haven't built ours yet...

I just went to Home Depot to start picking up the supplies...
and did some preliminary dimensions...

but...
I hope ours will come out as good...
if not better
than the one at C6

I want to use a different graphic and have the piece lit from above...

I plan on building one in Maryland. Great that you are taking one on. The one at Celebration has square legs, but if you look at the pics and even the toy one, I believe they are tapered.

Do you know exactly what was used in the real one for the control panels?

Also, it was recommended to me that I tape off the circles, then just use sand paper to sand the exposed circle areas, to make it etched. Once you do that, you can shine light from bottom and it will show on etched parts. You will also need to experiment with trapping the light and blocking it from escaping on edges.

I will keep a watch on your progress. I probably will not start on it till the Summer.

The straight lines can be taped...then sanded and painted...
however...
for the circles...
I have some other ideas...like car pinstriping tape which is able to make the curves easier....
or maybe contact paper....gonna experiment on that...

a taper on the legs should be do-able....one of our members is a carpenter...so I hope to press him into service for some of this.

thanks for the ideas...

this project needs to be completed by the end of May...so I do have time...yet that time will pass quickly...

maybe you could pt a layer of tape, then draw curves, then cut out tape from curves?

Phyllis, let me know how big the circles need to be. I might be able to cut them out of vinyl on my cricut machine, but can only go up to a 12 inch circle.
