I got my copy of the new "Costumes of the Original Trilogy" book yesterday...
and..

there is some great detailed photos of all of the Pilots costumes...

Pick up a copy if you don't already have one....
or if you are in the process of making one of these costumes...

will try to provide some scans later...

I could not help but think how great it would have been to have that book out while I was beating my head into a wall trying to see the greeblies on my Y-Wing vest...
some of that is very clear in the photos in the new book..

Yup, it's got some good stuff in it. My only complaint, besides the lack of pictures of B-wing pilot Nien Nunb (or pictures of Nien Nunb at all) is that they don't show any pictures of the right side of the helmets. Why do people always take pictures of the left side of helmets but never the right? Drives me crazy.

I wonder what the rest of the "HELP HELD CAPTIVE AT ILM" patch says? Razz

For what? The A-wing or B-wing pilot flak vest? (It looks like both vests use the same material.) That doesn't look too bad, though it does look a little "furry"-- though that might just be because the picture can zoom in so close. Also, it has adhesive on the back so you wont be able to sew with it, the adhesive will just gum up your sewing machine needle. I learned that the hard way. But if it wasn't for the adhesive the material wouldn't be too bad.

This is what I'm using for my next B-wing pilot flak vest. It's not perfect and has a few colors that it shouldn't (like the neon green) but with some strategic cutting I think that I can avoid some of the larger bits of unwanted colors...

We found that a good material are moving blankets (like what you get with Uhauls).

When I looked at the stuff...I originally thought old fashioned horse saddle blankets...the piece that goes under the saddle....

We have a U-Haul right next to where I work...might have to poke my head in the door there..

I would say to be careful with the colour selection of your fabric.

These pics make it look grey but it's actually quite a rich brown as shown in my pics below.

Would be interested in getting an LCJ opinion on the vest though. I want to upgrade my current vest, but need to be sure what the agreed colour is Confused

I thought it was light grey, but then Scott showed me other pics which look brown and even dark grey, so I'm a bit confused now!

Boy, all these new pics really want to make me build a B-Wing costume. I wonder if anyone is going to make accurate B-Wing helmets? *coughalexcough*

I'm working on the B-wing pilot helmets. The one block mold I have is nearly ready for casting, I just have to scrounge up the money to get materials for it. I've also got a chestbox almost ready for casting (not from a movie mold), a belt box, various greeblies, and some other stuff that I'm working on, like crossover bits for A-wing and Y-wing pilots as well. I'll have the whole shabang available hopefully before the Celebration. Smile

I haven't decided yet how many of the B-wing pilot helmet greeblies I'm going to be making... There are just so many different greeblies that it's hard to make them all. I mean, no two helmets seem to have the same greeblies, and the ones in the Costumes book aren't even all of them that I've seen. I think I'll just have a couple sets at first, perhaps the ones I already have plus a couple that I'm remaking now that there are better pictures, and make other styles as I go along.

Any chance we can get an LCJ opinion on the vest colour please? I'd like to work on my vest over Xmas so I'm not bored to death over the holidays Wink

For which vest? B-wing and A-wing pilots look to use the same material (except for the white front on the A-wing pilot vest), which appears to be a medium gray, though a light gray would pass, and they have bits of color fibers. Fireproof safety blankets, which are what I'm using, are pretty close.

The vest definitely isn't brown. It does look brown in some pictures but those pictures are always more recent ones and the brown could be discoloring from aging or because of the lighting. Pictures that were taken during filming show that the vests most definitely aren't brown and are medium or light gray with various color fibers. Also, one thing that I've noticed with the blankets I have is that in some lighting they do tend to take on a brownish hue, probably because of the various colors in it.

For the Y-wing pilot vest, I would say a very light tan, closer to white but not a pure white... Ivory or eggshell, maybe?
