|

Hi gang – longtime Dragon*Con attendee, fell away from it for a while but came back last year and got inspired to try costuming this year. Have chosen ceremonial Leia, and it’s coming together nicely.
My big snag is with the necklace. What are your favorite sources out there for a reasonable version of the necklace that's durable – and could ship by August 18 or so?
I found some replicas online made of Sculpey, but that scares me a lot because I've heard it's really fragile. I'd prefer resin, but I could only find two sources: Shadow Dale Creations and American Molds on eBay. SDC has some really sketchy reviews, and the payment requirements are pretty non-standard. AM has been "away" for weeks on end now and isn’t due back till really close to the con, if it doesn't push out again.
Got quoted a price of $3,419 for the Lapponia one, so that’s out. Making it myself is beyond my puny craft-skill level, and I also know myself enough to know I don’t have time to get it done before the con.
Any thoughts and advice are welcome! |

The first one I had was made from scuply, and it was very durable. I dropped it a few times and never had any issues with it breaking.
And if you don't mind my asking, where did you get the quote from for the Lapponia piece? When I looked into it about a year ago the quote I received was $1,500.00 |

I'm hoping that someone will get the individual pieces to a 3D printer one of these days. |

Blue, that's really good to know that sculpey's more durable than I thought. The Lapponia quote came from The Jewelbox, a store in New York state that has a website my husband checked out. He contacted them for me as a surprise but was shocked at the number that came back. They did say they were ordering directly from Lapponia in Finland.
Jaxxa, I totally agree! This seems made for 3D printing, if only there were a template out there. |

I can echo Beth – my home made sculpey one has lasted years, and I’ve lugged it around just about everywhere.
It was years ago, but I ordered one from the same jewelry store in New York, and the actual price then was just under what Beth says her quote was. Perhaps try talking to another person at the store. Or try another store. To me, $3500 is just way out of line. _________________

Question for the LCJs: If a plastic printed version were available and looked the part with the appropriate metallic finish, would there be any approval objections? |

As long as it looks correct, you should be fine with it. |

Mine is made from Polymer clay. I believe there are a couple ebay and etsy sellers who make accurate looking necklaces too. Shadow Dale creations makes very nice ones out of resin for $100. I want to buy one of their's in the future. |

I saw one on eBay last week when I queried "star wars costume'. I cannot easily look right now, but I think it wasn't priced bad.

I hope you found a necklace, but I got a sculpey one back in... umm, 2007, I think, and I'm still using it today. Just keep it wrapped in a single layer of bubbleplast for transport. No problems yet. (Except for a broken lock that needed replacement). _________________

Much appreciated, everyone! I got a very nice one on Etsy for Dragon Con, and it worked out great. I saw that same resin one on eBay, Dave, but that seller was away for months on end over the summer and couldn't do it in time. I'm all sorted for now. :-) |
