Hi everyone!
I've been saying I'm going to remake this one so that it can be approved, and I'm FINALLY starting to make some progress. 3 weeks and counting before I go back to school, so I need to get a move on. Surprised
I'm having trouble dying my fabric for the shirt. I had a white cotton gauze and cheesecloth which I dyed with Rit Royal Blue. After the dryer it, it looked more purple than blue, so I redyed them with Rit Navy. After drying it still looks purple. I've thought of not using Rit again and using a different dye. Does anyone with more experience have suggestions?

Thanks!

Having tried and failed a lot with rit and other dyes, one of the things you have to realize is that once you get your fabric a dark color, it's a lot harder to bring it back to any other color. Rather than doing a ton of dye baths, my recommendation is mixing your dye colors ahead of time (and getting lots of extra of all of your colors) and then doing swatch tests before you dunk all of your fabric in.

Although it's not organized as well as it used to be, here is rit's color mixing library: https://www.ritstudio.com/color-library/

Also, remember that the belt gauze is a slightly different color of blue than the shirt.

I'm really looking forward to your Padme V.2. I finally found a netting I like better than what I have now and a V.2 is on my to-do list this year as well. I still am having trouble finding the right weave for the vest on top though.

Thanks, Jenna,

I'm about to do 2 test swatches, one with Rit and one with Dylon. Hopefully one of these will work. Razz

That's really exciting that you found some new netting! I hope you can work on it soon and that it turns out the way you hope! Smile

Hello!

You need MORE Dye.

My Palpatine robes for example I used 22 boxes of Jet Black Rit dye on 7 yards of white Waffle Weave. I cold and hot dyed it 4 times to achieve the black color needed for that costume.

Buy 5 or so boxes, dump it on in and see what your outcome is. Do NOT trash your dye. if its still not dark enough add another box and dye again (maybe even longer this time)

What part of southern California are you in? I am in So cal as well! Amadalia

My best advice is, do NOT Trash your dye,
Do not be afraid to dye more than once or mix dyes.

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up using a different brand entirely, and it worked much better! The shirt may be a little dark, but I really like the color anyways.

I'd like to fix the neckline to it doesn't sag when I wear it. But that will need to wait for a few months when I'm back home. Dawn, I live in Anaheim. Where are you?

I love the texture you achieved with your top layer, and the colors really do look great. Your bias tape around the edge is lovely too. The belt fabric is a slightly different blue than the shirt, so I am looking forward to seeing what you do with that contrast.

Thanks, Jenna!
I've seen people talk about the belt being slightly different. Is it a little darker (I can't really tell). I thought it was just that the fabric was more bunched up and layered than on the shirt, which is a bit transparent.

Having seen it in person, it's definitely a darker color. The weave is looser than your shirt's base layer but tighter than your top layer on the shirt. I just used a standard cheesecloth, and it seemed to mimic the texture pretty well.

Ok, thanks. Seeing as I used all the blue cheesecloth for the shirt, I'll be dying some more anyways. We'll see how it turns out. Smile Since its so light, does your belt get caught on stuff a lot?

Unfortunately yes. It's kind of a fragile costume, in general. That's one reason I am planning to redo it after lots of hard wear. I folded/bunched my belt cheesecloth at least in quarters so it looks a little bit more substantial while still having that really fine weave. I think that also helps it be less fragile.

Found a candidate for the tunic fabric! Only thing is its too light so was going to (dare I say it?) dye it. (I can't tell you how happy I'll be when I find a fabric I DON'T have to dye!!) The costume standards say the fabric has to be heather gray, and I'm afraid if I dye it will all be one solid color. Do you think this will be a problem or do you have a suggestion for how to dye it to get more texture?

This is not good representation of the color. It's more like a light beige with almost a greenish undertint.[/img]

This is for the vest? Although I don't have a good alternative recommendation, that looks like it will be too light-weight for the vest fabric. It also lacks the color variation found in the original. I'm still hunting for new vest fabric for myself.
