I'm starting this topic in the hopes that I will be able to update it regularly throughout the year. My goal for this year is to start, and make good progress on, my Senate Gown.

I got two fabric swatches in the mail for the velvet, but I don't think either are spot on. I'd love to use the darker one though, it has such a wonderful depth to it and has the green backing just like the original!

Some other goodies I've been collecting

I'm very excited to see your progress. This costume is a dream of mine and I know I will enjoy seeing it come to life over this year as you work on it.

Yes, I feel like something inbetween the two of these will look great. If you had to choose one I'd default to the more Blood red of the two. This dress is spectacular and I can't wait to see your progress!!

Thank-you, ladies! I'm going to order more velvet swatches when I have the money to spend. I'm not sure I'm going to find anything that is spot on. I have some Hoth commission work to get through and then I hope to be able to spend more time on this. Very Happy

This is my favorite Amidala costume, hands-down. I'm really excited to see you work on it. Mr. Green

I do like the darker velvet you found better, with the green backing. There is always the terrifying option of custom dying if you really aren't satisfied with the swatches you get, but that is a lot of velvet to be dying.

How much velvet are you planning to get?

I'm not sure on the quantity yet, because the shoulders and lower front portions of the robe are smocked (sort of) which will eat up a LOT of velvet. I really don't want to be dying that much velvet...I'd probably ruin it. Surprised I'm starting to lean more toward that darker swatch with the green backing. I really love the depth of it and the fact that, when turned in the light, it catches the green backing just like the original. <3

Last night, I started on the cardboard base for the "hair horns" and also the red dangles. The red fabric and metal detail pieces aren't fastened on permanently yet.

My sister came over today and helped me get a start to the head piece by helping me with the plaster cap.

Are you using the plaster as a mold? What type of material will you use for the base of the headpiece?

That shape looks great! May I ask where you got the metal pieces for her hair danglies? This costume is totally on my to-do list for when I'm (finally) done being a student and get a stable job.

The plaster is the base for the headpiece. I'm trying to keep this as inexpensive and lightweight yet durable as possible.

I got the metal details from Hobby Lobby. I need to upload more pictures to show, but right now I need to make dinner! Rolling Eyes

Here are a couple pictures of my progress:

A check of proportions

Headdress progress (I'm working on one for a customer at the same time)

Detail pieces that I've painted with 3D paint. When I'm ready to apply them, I'll be gluing them on and then everything will get painted gold so it matches.

Beading progress.

Looking great! That 3D paint idea is brilliant. You really are moving along with this quickly!

Thanks for that link, Dawn. I saw this in person at a Star Wars in Concert troop, unfortunately, the headdress is not the screen-used version. But I welcome the new images of the soft parts of the costume, especially the beading!

*Edit: Actually, looking at it again, I'm pretty sure this is the replica that was used in the Rose Parade, not the screen used version. But, the images are still helpful. Thanks!

I finished my headdress on Saturday:
