NECRO POST TIME!
Check that last post date. 5 years. Life happens, and costumes get in the way.
This morning I ordered a Racal from Spat , its a direct copy of the original headset. I pulled out my old spats I made, and took a new photo. Thanks Photobucket for eating over 1000 photos I had posted to forums.
So heres the new photo. I re read our discussion topic when we were putting the costume together, and Ill be using the tan suit I have for my Yavin and Hoth costumes. I wont be dont the tan pants/ shirt with collar. Why? Because at my size, finding a tan pants with shirt collar combinatiuno, THAT MATCH and do not have built in phone pockets on the leg, is a bear. I wasted a lot of money buying stuff onine, you get it, and its a copletely different color from the other half. So, my approved coveralls.
Ill be weathering my ERT vest, my gloves are still out there and usable, and Ill fix up the gaiters by moving the clip, as discussed above.
I got a bunch of screen grabs from Starwarsscreencaps . com and you can see the crewman in the cockpit of the Falcon behind Nein Num and Lando. This is the coverall version.
goig back to our original discussion on this, there is clearly a version of Kraken with a collared shirt.

I moved my buckles and raised them, now it looks closer to what we see in the promo image. We know the buckles move around either by how they were sewn on, or by wear when the gaiter shifts. Either way, its closer to the centerlines.

It is good to see that you are continuing your Endor gunner project. It is not a very common costume similar to our Signals Intelligence Technician.
I always thought General Cracken's costume was a little strange. His gloves, gaiters, and vest are so very dirty compared to his new looking flight suit in that promo photo.

I agree, its wierd to see that much weathering on the vest. It was a topic on the earlier discussion to come up with the Standard, but it was done to appear on film. My gear always got stained, and i would wash it at the motor pool with a truck brush and soap, but eventually stains set in. I had older BDU's I would wear to the field, since I didnt want my "good" BDUs getting stained and tore up, so I can see the crewmen changing out things like coveralls which would get cleaned, vs field gear which pics up (wierd and wrong) stains.
I stained my gaiters today. I used potting soil and old soda. worked pretty nicely.

I found references that the gaiters are not sewn closed tubes. They have a Velcro closure in the back. They also seem to slip and slide as well are turn a lot in the different gunner scenes.

These are good references. Thats how I made mine. I made mine with tan strips near the top because that was the consensus, but the Standard says silver webbing and has a triangular part. We figured out later it was tan, and it was half of a side squeeze clip.
So, heres what came in today, its my headset from Spatcave. I have another one for my Colonial marine. These are great, and totally affordable. Cleanup and assembly is pretty easy.
Id like to use these images as part of my submission if that is OK since they are clear, and clearly as seen on screen tan.

Of course, you can use the screencaps as references for your approval. You are not the first person that is doing that. That is one of the reasons why I am posting them.
You head phones lock great. I have a 3D printing file for them but I have not started any costumes that need them yet. _________________ RAID GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019 - present

These are copies of the Racal Spat hA been providing for years. Good stuff. The ear insert is the largest and it was silicone so it fit all but the smallest ears. Ill be sanding mine down to fit me better. I plan to get it knocked out todat. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

I got my Racal knocked out tonight, and got it all dialed it where it fits me properly. I did not know until tonight that spat molds them with a wire supporting the earpiece. I cut around the earpiece support, twisted it, and bent the wire/resin to fit my ear. Super happy with that. My Colonial Marine headset just hangs around my neck and gets hung up on my armor, so , yeah
I also shortened the headband extensions so they would collapse down all the way before I screwed them to the earpieces. The headbands on all headphones dont fit me. Never have. so I cut it, took out half an inch/ 12mm and riveted it back together. Ill cover it with some super thin leather I have.
The other headphone parts got their fit improved by cutting the notch on the headband deeper, and notching the ear support . I used the heavy long wire he sent to mount the microphone, and i used a junk power cable for the comm wire. Some Racals have a hand trigger with a clip. I want that, so I made it with both 6MM and 3MM sintra. I LOVE sintra. Ill get it sanded out on my belt sander tomorrow, and finish it all up with a good looking trigger.
Now all this is left is to paint and add the comm wire when I finish the hand mic trigger.

I think this is very interesting. I have never seen someone build the headset before. _________________ RAID GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019 - present

this one is made by spat at spatcave studios. I suggest getting the black version, it will be stiffer. Mine is the white one and I knew the issues going in with white resin, but got it anyway.
I painted it with "resin chair" tan paint. its wierd paint, i dont like it, and its still sticky. Part of the resin reaction too. Then i threw that old can away. I hate that paint. But the color is very close to the original light beige
I wear glasses so the headset doesnt sit perfectly on me, but thats just part of it. the real ear insert was silicon , this is cast resin, so I made it fit the best I could.
its comfortable enough to wear, no issues, just have to get your ear past the lobe. If you watch Lt Ripley put hers on, she works it over her ear when she calls Sgt. Apone in the reaction chamber. This is part of putting them on.
I will fix up the hand mike tomorrow, i went car shopping today and that just did me in.
I will cover up the headband tomorrow, its late and I have car research to do.

The last of my parts are complete. I'll suit up this weekend for photos.
this is fresh brand new still wet weathering and will all dry lighter.
I used potting soil the first time around and rubbed it in. The trigger material shunted it right off!!!
So i mixed old liquid bbq smoke flavor liquid with water to stain it and then rubbed in the potting soil for extra dirt. it will dry much lighter, and the stain from the potting soil should remain even though the dry bits will fall off.

the liquid smoke/ stain has dried, and its nearly invisible. The super bright lights in my dining room just wash it out.
The areas i ground in wiht potting soil did a better job. I may redo some of that tomorrow. However, there is the train of thought that less is more- so I may just leave it and let the judges decide.

SO- today I took my vest to work and got it dirty by rubbing all over my rental car with it. Now it looks more appropriate with a number of stains etc. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

Well, real dirt seems to work well for most people. I could not use real dirt to weather my costume because I am a germophobe it would gross me out too much. _________________ RAID GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019 - present
