Hello everybody!
I was wondering, if someone could provide me with an answer concerning Padmé Amidala's Black Invasion costume?
I have nailed most of the fabrics for the dress, but I am wondering about the lace layer on the dress. In the costume standards, it states that it is a black lace, but what kind of lace do I use? (Most of the laces in stores have flower motives)
A friend of mine found this fabric as a candidate.
Would this do the trick? Please ignore the red colour

I tried 3 different materials.
I started with something like this.
PLEASE go to my invasion gown guide. I just made mine in April.
Its got the most up to date prices * feel*. (because I literally just finished it)
http://queenamidalasabe.blogspot.com/
I ended up using a 1 inch wide spider webpattern design for knit scarves. *see image in my tutorial* I spent HOURS sewing the stuff together,
I did use something like what your proposing. Its just not "gritty" enough. Its to patterned.
You need something thats messy. Hope that makes sence
For the spiderweb "lace" I have used 2 different layers
For the gold silk layer I sewed various strings into it. You can see it in "step 5" image when you zoom in. look at the chest area. Thats before I over layed the 1 inch sewen together strips.
Its very very very very messy. As you can see.
PLEASE mail me if you need ANY advice on making this monstrosity.
I tell people I dont wish this dress upon my worst enemy! It took me 5x longer to sew and 5x more money than any costume ive ever made to date
Also on my Blog, I state that you will need only 30 Ostrich Feathers, Buy a minimum of 50. I currently have almost 60 in mine. I have to add a few everytime I troop.
I usually spend 3 hours on the dress everytime I take it on a troop. I dont know if its the way I made my dress that I have to do so much work to it or what.. but something is ALWAYS happening to the thing! haha
Feel free to post the other stuff you got! I can comment if needed. I also went through 3 different jacket materials until I nailed down the right weight!
I ramble way way to much about this dress, I just love to help people NOT make the same mistakes I did!
High 5 for Amidala _________________

Hello again!
Thank you so much for the link to your blog! So many details and pictures (and the video tutorial to the 'spikes' on the jacket was great!)
I have two questions about the jacket, though. I'm trying to figure out what pattern you used for it? And how many yards of fabric did you use for it?
Thanks again! |

Also btw... I was at Joannes, they have THIS AMAZING material... would have saved me HOURS OF SEWING!! I HIGHLY Recommend buying this material it looks so much like the original.
They just got it in for Halloween! I dont even have any plans on remaking this dress anytime soon and still bought 2 yards (at 19.99 a yard) *use a 40% off coupon* My stores got 5 yards of it left.

I finished this costume for TPM 3D release in February 2012. Actually, I had been planning it for several years. I gathered most of the materials in 2006 (the red/gold dress fabric and the webby material), and stored it away. This is my favorite costume of the prequels. The link to my progress photos:

I also was going to suggest checking JoAnn's Fabrics now that they have their Halloween fabrics in stock.
Please post your progress photos! I love seeing all the different members version of this dress. I don't think I will be able to make Celebration this year, as it is during the spring semester, but it would have been cool to get a photo with all the Black Invasion dresses. _________________

LaVonne, oh my gosh I know right?! That would have been AMAZING to get as MANY Black Invasions in one room. This dress is heck to sew and there is so many ways to go about doing it XD
Yeah when I found that material at joannes I darn near squealed! _________________

I'll be helping Karen with this costume (I'll be figuring out the size and pattern for her, and then let her do the long hours of work ;D ), and this is awesome! Thank you for this drawing!! Saves me a headache
One question though, what does the 'do 25 on all ends' at the bottom mean? _________________ Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes. |

A quick experiment ...
I had some fishnet fabric laying around, and I snipped a few quick holes in it. How would that work?? It's thicker (as seen in the pictures), random, and you can pattern it as you want. Please excuse it being red on black in stead of black o gold

Looks great! Funny enough I tried this route myself, however on the material I used when I pulled the whole thing would start to unravel. The other part for personal preference that I didn't like was the bits of fray that it left on the edges. It does look nice, so dont get me wrong!! ^.- _________________
