Event: Bartlet IL - Independence Day Parade & cookout OUR 11TH YEAR ! !
Date: Sunday July 7th 2013

BARTLETT PARADE BASICS (or "HOW WE DO THIS THING!")
Since things can be a little chaotic on the morning of this event, even for the folks who have done it before, I wrote up this guide for the basic plan of attack. First timers might need to read through this a couple times to get the idea and use the map above to keep track of the battle plan. If anything doesn't make sense, please feel free to ask a question on this thread, and we'll do our best to clarify everything!
...

I think there's a little confusion about terms like "start" and "staging area" and "base camp" and the "end of the parade" and all.
Staging Area/Staging Location/Parade Start: At the north end of the parade route, this is where we get suited up and where we step off for the parade. When the parade starts, we cannot leave anything behind here!
Base Camp/End of the Parade: At the south end of the parade route, this is where we end up after the march. It's where we leave our cars, where we suit down after everything is over, and where we hang out after the parade. During the parade, anything you aren't carrying with you or wearing needs to be left here.

To be 100% clear for any folks who haven't done this before, here's the basic plan of attack:

This photo is marked as "cookout"....though this year we will not be haveing a cookout...

We will just have "base camp" or at the very least...the beer tent....lol...

1) Drive to the Staging Area at the corner of North Berteau and Morse in Bartlett, IL (see map link above). This is a residential street and close to the "start" of the parade. Pull all of your armor out of your armor tub (but not undersuits/flight suits or boots), and pile it up there. We will leave guards there to make sure it doesn't disappear.

2) Drive south with your empty tub to the Base Camp at the end of the parade and park on the field there. This is where we'll be having our Garrison picnic after we finish marching.

3) At Base Camp, get out of your street clothes and into your undersuit/flightsuit/soft costume and your footwear. Make sure you aren't wearing anything that you won't be wearing in the parade!

4) Hitch a ride with one of the cars making shuttle runs back to the Staging Area. The last transport leaves base camp no later than 12:15pm (and maybe earlier than that)! This time will not be not negotiable, since the city begins closing streets for the parade an hour or two before the event starts, and that makes shuttle runs impossible.

5) At the Staging Area, put on the rest of your costume which you left here before. Remember: at this point, you shouldn't have any sneakers or t-shirts or cut-off jean shorts with you. Once you're in costume, you shouldn't have anything else with you (aside from props)
.
6) Hang out with your fellow Legion members. Drink water and keep cool. DO NOT LEAVE TRASH HERE. Dispose of it properly.

7) Group photos (probably around 12:40 or so)

8 ) Step off at 1:00pm!

9) The parade route marches us all back to base camp, where your armor tub, your street clothes, and some great times are waiting for you!

That's the basic idea. If you have a soft costume (and can wear it while packed into a car!), then you can change into it at base camp before heading up to the Staging Area. Basically, you can skip the first two steps above and just park at base camp and change there before catching a transport up to the Staging Area.

The most important thing to remember is that you won't be coming back to the start of the parade, so you shouldn't have anything there that won't be worn or carried with you as you march. Armor tubs, street clothes, coolers, food, folding chairs, teddy bears, and anything else needs to be back at Base Camp (at the END of the parade) before we step off. Street closures and traffic all along the route means that we all pretty much need to be in place and set at least 90 minutes before the parade starts.

I blew up the image a size larger than the one above...and am not really sure how big I want to make the flag...

to be honest...
that large Rebel Alliance Flag that both Crix and I bought is very cool...
but for short people....it is kind of a pain to carry and keep off the ground....

I want to give it a shot of making my own... I really like my Rebel flag, but I wanted a different color... black flag with orange Rebel symbol.

when I get time, I want to try it.

how did you do yours? did you cut 2 rebel symbols out and sew one on each side? or cut out rebel symbol on flag then sew symbol on?

Once I actually start cutting..
I will post up on my "project pile" thread...
making these is kind of a pain because the fabric is sport nylon which frays like crazy...but it is the same fabric that I made the Alliance Flags out of and I use it because it doesn't stain as bad as cotton and other fabrics and when dirty it washes out really well and colors never run.

According to the first post for this topic, it is mentioned that the event is all day, and I saw that the parade starts at 1:00. A few questions I had regarding those items:

1. Do we have a time set that we need to arrive and be ready by?

2. Are participants "required" or encouraged to be costumed all day?

3. Do we have a designated parking area?

4. Is there anything else I haven't covered, like any post-parade activities?

Update to first post...
if any of the instructions are not clear....or the update didn't answer any of your questions...
please just give me a holler...

Very Happy
and....

"after parade" plans are still being worked on...
but...
right now the talk is to either get something at a nearby fast food store or deli and/or
just eating the food available at the carnival...which is right there....and using the huge food/beer tent...

They do plan on having a Midwest Garrison meeting after the parade.

REMEMBER ALL JEDI AND CLONES.....

If you have a Jedi costume or Clone armor

...please plan on wearing that as part of the "Farewell to the Clone Wars" parade within a parade...
and..

good to see that we will have General Kenobi

Very Happy

All other NSB members without Jedi or Clone...
please wear your most iconic costume...

Very Happy

My clone will not be ready Sad so Keeli will miss out. Thought I could squeak it out, but i had to do some major overhauls...good news is it will look awesome once complete bad news, no Bartlett.

I do have all my soft pieces for Fisto complete, so i could wear that as a generic old republic jedi...

I will be there! Will be riding up with Roland and Tyler, so definitely looking forward to my first Bartlett parade! Considering just wearing my Porkins since it looks like the Jedi are outnumbering the clones at this point (plus I'm trying to get my kill count up X-Wing 1 )
