I think I had offered to do this in the past..
and I have a little more confidence now...
I am by no stretch of the imagination any kind of expert at leatherworking

BUT
I can show you a few things....and some tricks I have learned by making all of the mistakes for you....lol..

So...

I am offering a workshop/armor party at my house for anyone wanting to learn the basics of leatherworking.

This would include stuff like making a holster pattern, cutting leather, wet forming, hand sewing, hole punching, snap setting, rivit setting, dyeing...
and most importantly

basic tools.

February will be a decent month for me....
I have two Saturdays open ...which is RARE indeed and several Sundays also...

So...

if there is any interest....
these are the dates I have open let me know if any of the dates will work for the majority of people who are actually interested:

This Saturday and Sunday
Feb 2nd
Feb 3rd

and

Feb 9th
Feb 10

lastly
Sunday Feb 24th

LEATHER 101 Bespin Luke round pouch.

See this photo for what someone's finished pouch looks like:

OK...

So...

prefacing this again that I don't have a clue what I am doing...I am just working on a "puzzle"...and ....likely there might be a few posts...
then a post that says..

"well....that didn't work"...
and a do-over...

but here we go.

I started out by trying to figure out how big this piece is supposed to be. I was not able to get a pattern or a size....so..
I winged it...

I cut one piece of 5/6 oz leather for the curved part (not sure that was a good idea) and a 7/8 oz for the back panel

next I soaked the pieces I cut in warm water for about a half hour and then wet formed the thinner leather piece over a piece of pvc and left it to dry....I actually let it dry for several days cuz I was busy and could not get back to it.

that is an old wood cutting board I am letting it dry on..

After dry...
I got this..

I had to cut the fold over part of the backing piece so that it had a curve...

and...since that leather is pretty thick I decided to skive the backside of that flap to make it more flexible...

After that was done...
I checked the fit

It is here that I began to argue with myself as to whether or not to dye the pieces first.....or to assemble and then dye...
I decided to assemble and then dye...

Next I had to address closing up the bottom...
didn't really know how to do that so...
I traced the opening at the bottom and made a template

then used the template to cut out a piece of leather...
and checked that fit

it fits "meh" but not too bad....

Next I had to mark and punch holes to stitch that piece in...
never have tried curved pieces....so the adventure began...

I used these little wheel thingies that Bob Kohn showed me...they come in a couple different sizes....

Utilizing Bob's procedure of punching every other hole...I chose my smallest wheel....and very carefully ran the wheel around the curved part of the bottom piece first
and then the bottom of the wet formed piece...

Next was to actually punch the holes...
I used an awl that I have various sized "blades" for...

and punched the holes in the bottom piece

For the record...
I have tried using one of these to stitch...and...well...
didn't really love it..
so I just used regular leather needles...

Well...
trying a curved needle...
broke the first one...but had a second one...

I can tell already that this will not go well...

No matter how I prepped and counted...somehow or another...the holes for this base part are off kilter

but...
onward and upward...
back to a straight needle to do the sides...

after stiching I used a little Barge cement on parts of the seams

Preparing for the snap at the top

Snap set

First coat of stain on...looks cr*ppy....
hopefully the second coat will make the piece look better

Will let the piece dry overnight before the second coat of stain

ok...
last coats of stain are on the piece...
still does not look really good...still blotchy...

and this is the pouch with the blaster and holster:

The round pouch came out rather terrible. Usually I come away from a first attempt/prototype with solid ideas on how to make it better....this time...
I got nothin....

I would definitely be interested. I am trying to make Jon's armor party thats on the 10th so I can begin my clone.

I guess the I'd be for the 24th, but I need to check with the family before i commit. Now I have a daughter who moved back home, and we have all her kids every other weekend, makes planning anything difficult anymore Sad

Guess I'm not really helping much, but i know i couldnt make your other dates

lol..
time management is always a juggling act..
Feb is about the only month where I will find myself with some time.

I am still working on the round pouch for the Bespin Luke..
but the next leather project after that will be a holster for my Naboo Pilot ascension gun.

I don't think the movies showed the Pilots with any kind of holster...so this will be a "freelance" thing. The one thing I did note when I did wear the Naboo Pilot (which has only been worn twice) is that it became a pain in the butt not to have a holster to put the ascencion blaster into...

so...

if we can't get together on a date..
what I will try to do when I make that holster is to really give a step by step from making a pattern to the finished product and include Tandy part numbers for the tools I used...

The day I think I know everything is the day I stop learning. I am sure there is much I can learn from you... Smile

Not to mention its time I started spending more time with fellow base members on both sides of the state line more. My job has changed where I get every other weekend off now, so trips like this can take place.

Heck I was in China town in Chicago just this last weekend... love that place.

Chinatown...sigh...
I used to go there quite often...
We do have an excellent Chinese restaurant in the next town..
I can call and make some orders...

Very Happy

and..

well...the one thing I can teach folks is how to do stuff "on the cheap"....lol..

I finished this Bespin Luke holster using the most basic of tools...
and..
since it was my first actual real holster...
I guess it came out OK...

ooooh ooooh I'm off the 9th!

Granted I think Jill is too, soooo I've gotta see what she has planned, for some reason I think she already has something in mind for that day.

well...
since it is already Thursday..
I will assume that this coming weekend is not feasible...

If there is one thing I have learned over the past couple of years..
and I learned this from Bob Kohn..
is that you don't know what you can do till you try...

If you told me a year or two ago that I could make the above holster...I would have told you that you were crazy...

Bob's encouragement to try new things has gotten me into molding and casting...
and more into leatherworking..
these skills have come in VERY handy
and I only want to pass on a few things to others...
the main business of learning is the process of trial and error but a few key tips can make the learning and trial and error process a little more rewarding..

To be honest..I owe the above holster to two bits of advice from two people...

Stud and snap setting advice from Lionel Bottari years ago
and
marking and hand sewing tools and advice from Bob...
the rest was up to me...
I looked at the holster as a puzzle that needed to be solved....

Again...I don't have the best of leatherworking tools...
I used a lot of inexpensive tools and things like a untility knife and a corn shaver instead of some of the more expensive tools like leather scissors and skiving tool. Bob showed me the inexpensive little wheel thingie to mark the leather for punching and hand stitching rather than more expensive punches ...
and sometimes the cheaper tools actual perform better...
I was indeed surprised at the results you can get from that little wheel thingie..and awl and a needle.

and now for a little

deadhorse

Over the past several years I have pushed for a NSB meeting...
not so we can sit around and talk about dry and boring "political" things..but rather to have demos by some of our members giving advice on many different facets of this hobby...a chance to see concepts in motion etc. Also to bring projects that you are working on and maybe have hit a snag...or a project you would like to do but just don't know were to start.

Also, as witnessed by the extreme fun we had when Crix gathered up some of us local Endor Commandos and Jedi to Delwood Park in the fall for a photo shoot..
I thought bringing along some of our costumes and doing some group shoots would be a nice addition to a "meeting"
Those photos came out GREAT.... we had a lot of fun doing them...
and we got a LOT of positive response on them...

go here if you have not already seen the results of our Base photo shoot:

http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa304/schphgochi/Dellwood%20Park%20photoshoot%209-23-2012/?start=all

A NSB meeting would/should take place along the IL/WI border...
be at a small hotel/motel that would offer us a meeting room at no charge..
and have perhaps some nearby park...or facility for photoshoots..
This would be something that would require some of our members to take vacation days...
and would certainly be an expense for all of us..
BUT
in terms of unifying the Base
getting to know each other better
...I see it as a win/win
Cons and events are too "busy" to spend any quality time...

anyway...
back to our regularly scheduled thread..
I do have the feeling that this will NOT come off ....it didn't make it anywhere last time either...
but that's ok...

I offered the folks at the MWG the chance to come too...and..
there does not appear to be any interest there either...

again..
that's ok...

Very Happy

Its an issue I see and hear about all the time in these costuming clubs. The areas that thrive are the ones that find the time to get together as a unit on the side.

It takes effort, but the results are without question are positive. The same effort that we put into our costume needs to go into the group to make wearing those costumes a possibility.

We need to remember we are only as strong as our weakest person... that's why we have bases. To help those who are not as strong with their costuming skills should be a primary goal from all of our members, not just a few.

I think we SHOULD have regular meetings/ armor parties... and at lesat 1 gathering a year as an entire base. This would require command to step up the effort and organize a meeting. It means hounding members with reminders... draggining them kicking and screaming if needed.

Let me know if help is needed.

Bob

I don't disagree, I'd like to make this happen but it really doesn't seem to be a whole lot of interest in doing this but we can try again and see where it goes.

if can combine the meeting with something... like that photoshoot or something, we might get more people..

I know I wont be free until the fall. (unless the new bid goes my way)
I used up most of my sick days already with the flu couple weeks ago.
