Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to announce that I am back in the UK and I am more than ready to start working on my Rex. I won't have much time in the next few days but I will slowly start working on it!
I've got nearly all tools that I need. Just need to get some snaps, maybe more velcro and bondo ( I will get it tomorrow).
I've received my blaster, I am gonna visit post branch to pick up my kit (taxes, etc are 20GBP) and helmet is being processed by custom clearance in the UK!
Sorry for bad quality, iPad sucks. I started sanding pistols today.
Oh and I have rare earth magnets somewhere..
Do you think I should modify the shoe sole?

The kit! Its WCA/ATA kit by the way.
Exciting box.
I just marked cut lines on all pieces, too late to cut.
The whole set.

I had a super productive day today! Spent the whole day working on my costume (even forgot about a dinner).
I started with initial trimming of the armor but had to take a break in the meantime because my wrist was too tired of cutting the plastic and yes, I trimmed it all!
Then I had to adjust it to my size and shape so more cutting and checking.
Used a tape to help myself with cutting straight lines.
And the armor on for the first time! All done on my own so far, even the chest piece which was a tricky one :p
I am expecting helmet, pauldron and holsters delivery tomorrow. Also I will work on details like edges, straight lines so that it will be ready to glue.
And I am thinking whether I should make cod/butt and abs parts seamless or not. I am able to put it on without opening it... |

My main concern today is about forearms. I had to trim a lot at wrist because I couldnt bend my hand. Now its quite wide at wrist and still movements are limited. Should I trim it more and then use heatgun to narrow it?
Received the lid!
And its ready for assembly.
Currently working on seam lines to start gluing. |

Another busy day for me. I have finished all the trimming and sanding so its ready for assembly. Chest, ab and shins will be seamed, rest seamless.
I had few problems with chest and cod pieces because the difference in size was huge(no clue why) so I had to heat it up and remove excess.
Fixed:
Belt box:
Kev forgot to include usable boxes, thermal detonator and boot straps so I decided that I will use what I have. Here is the question- should I attach the back side of the box to the belt with velcro or rather something else?
If my cod piece is seamless, should I glue the belt to cod piece or velcro it?
Next question.. is it better to assemble range finder and helmet and then paint or paint it first?
And lastly I am not sure how I will attach the range finder so that it holds headband instead of screw used for grunt. |

Thanks
Update on yesterday. 13hours of gluing and modifying shoes. I didnt expect it would take that much time but I guess its always long the first time. Had some problems with a few parts and I was limited by the amount of clamps. Anyway its all glued now and I will start filling gaps today.
Sole modification. Trust me, you dont want to modify a sole of safety shoe. Its made of some weird material and its nearly impossible to cut it with dremel. I had to cut it mm after mm and it took a lot of time just to remove it.

Uhhh I am tired. 4th day in a row with 10-13hours of work on the costume, everyday when I wake up my back hurts and I feel all muscles (because of intensive cutting). But I am getting closer!
This is to show how much I had to trim in the past few days.
The main part of the day was to bondo all pieces and as it was my first time, so I had to test it a bit. On the bed you can see one part of kama (also done today). I filled all gaps in the morning so it was hard enough in the afternoon to sand it down. I am still feeling dust in lungs :p After sanding, I reapplied bondo for final touch. I will sand it in the morning and then apply primer.
And in the meantime I was trying to come up with solutions to pieces I am lacking - thermal detonator, usable boxes and shoe straps. Using some hips provided by terrell I created shoe straps (still have to shape them properly.
And I was lucky with the pipe because guys in a local DIY shop offered it for free! SO I will have a detonator but I am not sure how to attach it to the belt.
Visualising how holsters should be assembled.

I forgot to post on yesterdays progress.
Had to attach compad to left forearm.
Then I was thinking how to attach knee pads to shins. It had to be a strong bond and the shape of if didnt allow me to bind them safety so I decided to add 2 layers of plastic which is enough.
And finally I covered the armor with primer.
More to come today!! |

Today I kicked off with sanding forearm and its compad area. Then painting it with matte white Rustoleum.
I decided to wait til evening with detailed painting and after 9-10 hours I started to mask all elements. I am so proud of my hand made jaig eyes!
I will present how it all looks tomorrow when its dry. |

Finally some updates for you! Unfortunately I wasnt able to do it earlier because I moved house so I had a lot of packing, cleaning, etc. And I dont have internet access yet!
Now, when I am at uni I forgot to take one SD card with pictures so I wont be able to show you the whole progress.
ANyway, I had quite a few problems, mostly related to snap fasteners. I tried to attach belt boxes with 2 snaps but the belt is not flat so it was contantly detaching itself. I came up with some velcro+snap mix and hopefully it will work. Also I had a problem with snaps on shins because for no reason the male and female parts of snaps were glued to each other so when I tried to open left shin, it just came off with two parts of snap on one side. SO I will have to clean it and glue again (what I did was direct gluing of metal snap to plastic shin).
I finished kama and shoes. Also I weathered the whole armor (again no pics! -.-)... uhm wait.. I nearly finished the whole costume! Just need to improve my harness suspension and replace velcro with snap fasteners. Hook and loop works fine but the adhesive side sucks so I am gonna get more snap fasteners.
Shoe:
Its how I attached the detonator.
Weathered chest:
Weathered helmet:
And finally a test. I didnt have harness suspension so it was all messy and I had left shoulder and biceps on right arm. My velcro on legs failed. Basically it was just to see how everything works and I still have some work to do to keep it all in place. here you go:
More pics later!! |

nice progress mate
a few small observations though - and these are my opinion only based on what I would advise clones in the UK 501st Garrison
(1) Jaig eyes look too small
(2) armour still looks a bit too long for you; in particular the forearm (I would trim from the end near the hand) and in your lower limbs (although that may be a strapping issue rather than armour length)
(3) your biceps are the wrong way round
(4) the indents on the cheeks of the animated clones is quite dusty - weathering it here will make the details of the helmet pop out more
compare this (pre-weathered)
with the post weather helmet
but you are getting through this quick!

Great job. You are making me envious of all the time you've gotten to spend working on your armor. _________________

I got pics that I wanted to upload yesterday!
OLD PICTURES
Detonator.
More visible weathering.
inside shin (already changed it a bit)
holsters&boxes.
usable box.
hand plate.
How I was doing the weathering.
______________________________
Today the first thing I did was getting some more pop fasteners and super glue. And I started gluing, removing velcro and fitting again.
Fixed suspension.
Trimmed the inside part. Also I cut around 5-10mm off forearm .
New snaps at biceps.
improving harness.
Checking the position of shoulder bells.
Hopefully I will be done with proper fitting today so I will be able to take some pictures of the whole costume. Then I will see what to do with weathering. |
