Yes, I removed the clip for a better paint job.

You could just find a similar button that would fit and buy only as many as you need. Once it's glued and painted, one really can't tell the difference! I got the Plastruct domes because that was what was reported to have been used by the actual Lucas prop makers.

Hey all!

I have some pen questions for you guys!

I've had some trouble finding Staedtler Liquid Roller Point Pens for the food capsules. It seems as if Office Depot and Staples are no longer selling them. There have been some other companies I have found, but many of them are sold out.

I was wondering if some of these I did find were comparable to the above pens:

Staedtler 416 liquid point 5 0.3 mm rollerball - (in stock): http://www.pixiemall.com/product/staedtler-416-liquid-point-5-rollerball-pen-4-colors

Staedtler 417 liquid point 7 0.4 mm rollerball - (out of stock):
http://www.pixiemall.com/product/staedtler-417-liquid-point-7-rollerball-pen-4-colors

Other Questions:

1. I have found many references to the Staedtler Liquid Point 7 pen. I have also seen point 5 pens. Are these comparable to the SW pens?

2. Also, does it matter what size point the pen is? For instance, 0.3 mm or 0.4 mm? Does it change the overall size or diameter of the pen? Since the tutorials on food capsules don't really mention the different points or the mm size, I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks much guys! I have made progress on belt, and received the Plastruct domes in the mail - just working on the pens still. Smile

Your first link is not working...
and...
yes..
the original pen caps are not available anymore...
remember that the original movie was released in 1999 so, you will likely not find those pen caps anymore...

Many people are just using what they can find...

the original Staedler pen caps are 2" long and 7/16" in diameter...
and...
you throw the pen away..
or use it before it dries up..

Wink

Ok, that makes sense - sorry about the link - it should work now. Thanks for the dimensions! I'll just grab some and see how they work.

Here's something to think about:

The standards for ALL Jedi say "food capsules", they don't specify what they should be made from. Okay-okay, before I get blasted out of the stars...yeah, the judges may be fairly picky with respect to face characters, but even then...knowing that some materials (...and fabrics, etc. that were used in making the films) are no longer available, as long as the costume component looks screen accurate, we're okay with it. So...

...if you MUST use highlighter pen caps to make food capsules (and I don't think you do), you can just as easily use something like this:

http://www.officemax.com/office-supplies/pens-pencils-markers/highlighters/product-prod3810458

or this

http://www.officemax.com/office-supplies/pens-pencils-markers/highlighters/product-prod3520002

or even this one which closely resembles the ever difficult to find Staedtler pens:

http://www.officemax.com/office-supplies/pens-pencils-markers/highlighters/product-prod3820272

It's all in how you mod them to look like food capsules Wink

Oh...and if you need a method of how to mod the pen caps (which ever you choose to use), you can still use this site as a reference site:

http://public.fotki.com/Kait/star_wars/tutorials/jedi_food_capsule/

If you need any guidance, let me know Wink

Thanks guys!

Very fortunately, I was able to acquire 10 Staedtler liquid point 7, rollerball pens today! I decided to just go to Staples and check them out in case they had things they didn't include online. It turns out - they did! So don't anyone listen to their online catalogs - liars, they are. Wink I'm so excited! Going to be putting them together in the next couple of days!

Well done! Smile

I found them as well... and got enough so I could replace them as they broke or were lost. So elusive, I stocked up.

Thanks! Yes, actually, I ordered the hemispheres the same day I knew where to buy them. ^^ Going to be spray painting these babies today! Hopefully will get them to full fledged food capsules by tomorrow.

I contacted Mon-Jas about the belt, so things are getting closer!

BEYOND exciting!!!

I LOVE to see Jedi in the works and being completed. I get so excited when I'm finishing a new Jedi costume, and I share that excitement with others who are doing the same.

Looking foward to some pictures...and that application!

So, I finally painted my food capsules! We had two days of rain over here with high humidity that made spray painting anything a disaster for a while.

I'm doing a coat of bronze on half of them and leaving the others the metal primer color I picked. Then, I'll see if I can gloss coat them later tonight. I remembered that I have some paints for Warmachine (bronze, gold and the like), and am going to try them out to see how they look.

Very excitingly, I'm going to attend my first ever troop tomorrow morning with folks from Bespin Base at a book store event for Star Wars Read Day!! They said they didn't mind me hanging out, and I'm SO excited!! Though, I think I might be a tad freaked out initially, I'll get over it.

Belt is in the works - just waiting on belt contact person to get some new buckles in. ^^
