This standard Jedi belt buckle is non-functional, and is basically two D-rings joined by a piece of metal. Exactly the same concept as my buckle. So, I'm a bit confused as to why my buckle should be a problem. Would you be kind enough to clarify your concern, please?
Many thanks! |
I'd like to clarify things and say I don't personally have an issue with the buckle, but that the judges might. They do tend to insist on it looking functional, which is where this might run into trouble. Of course, you are welcome to try and sway their minds with good arguments, just thought as headsup would be kind. _________________

Thank you, Lora. I do appreciate the head's up, as differences in perception mean others see what I don't.
For instance, as someone who makes belts, to me Jedi belts are extremely nonfunctional, and fully 95% those buckles at the front in the movies are nonfunctional, without even the illusion of function. Actually making one, I still think that "Type A" belts aren't practical, and far prefer "Type B" belts. But I'm finding that in my personal opinion, some of the shortcuts taken by Lucasarts costume department are a bit ridiculous and impractical. Covertec clips are a particular bugbear of mine. Such is life!
I'm scheduled for a photoshoot tomorrow to take costume photos for submittal. Of course, I haven't finished all the components...
Here is the last pouch to be assembled, next to the first one.
I just need to lace the sides into finish it, so will be complete in time. Here's how it will sit on the belt.

I understand the concerns on the decorative buckles, but what is it about covertec clips that irks? _________________

Covertec clips are cheap, cruddy plastic. As you may have figured from my posts, I prefer strong leather and metal construction, things that can't easily break in a fight.
For Example;
These are the belt hangars I developed for my sabers. Unlike Covertec clips, they are strong, relatively battleproof, and allow a simple, superfast detachment with one hand.
Here they are demonstrating the sabers hanging.
D-rings are fine, but Covertecs to me are cheap plastic modern pager clips that drag down the look of my costume. I have similar concern with the concepts of dickies and obi with Velcro at the back. They change the costume from being good-looking, wearable, functional clothing to... A costume that looks good. Call me confrontational, but I'm starting to lean towards stricter interpretations of the costume standards then absolutely necessary when discussing costumes within my group. _________________ Until our next happy meeting!

Ah I see. The one I have for my son is metal with leather on the back, but the same form as a covertec (was made for tools or something like that) for that very reason. _________________

Wow, that is cool! Do you know if they are available online?
I mean no disrespect for those who have put in a massive amount of effort in making a movie-accurate costume. I can see and understand the effort that goes into those costumes. But I prefer my costumes to have plausibility to them, as well, because sometimes screen-accurate includes common shortcuts by costume departments. _________________ Until our next happy meeting!

I weathered the belt more, Michael, as per your suggestion, but wasn't completely happy with it. I'd visited another thrift store and came back with more belts, so in a fit of insanity made another belt with only an hour to go before my photo shoot. Needless to say... I was 45 min late for the shoot!
The results are worth it, though. Patent leather, no weathering as yet. The old belt is on top with the new belt underneath...

A jedi after my own heart, thrift stores are great.
It looks nice. With some gentle weathering and it should be sharp; maybe some very light sanding and some subtle color. Very best of luck with it. _________________

Phew! Wow, that was trickier than taking the pics or making the costume...
Here is Fyr's approval Photobucket album and below are some of the highlights.

Regarding this belt buckle, I submitted this style because I liked the look. If the Legion Costume Judge assessing my approval feels that the belt buckle puts my approval in jeopardy, replacing it is a simple matter of removing two rivets and putting in an Anakin EpIII style functional buckle, which I've seen readily available at a local craft shop. Thank you all for your support and feedback, your help and encouragement has been invaluable in the whole process of creating this costume and bringing it to a great standard!
My thanks, Fyr _________________ Until our next happy meeting!
