I'm using the great tutorial that Jedi XXL has made available to create a new flack vest. I'm having some difficulty with selecting the material. The tutorial says
Quote:
Heavy white or off white nylon for exact reproduction, heavy cotton (denim) will work for a non screen accurate version. ( 2 - 3 yards )

The only 100% nylon my local Jo Ann Fabric carries is a rip-stop nylon that that looks like the material you'd make a kite or a flag out of. It's shiny and transparent. It just doesn't look right. Can anyone let me know what material they've used on their own costume?

Here's my favorite flak vest reference picture...

That sport nylon is the exact stuff I used. You double-layer it to eliminate the transparency. If you click to zoom and look on the very edge of the vest in the picture, you can see the real thing is more transparent where there's fewer layers too.

The sport nylon is usually in the same section (utility fabrics) as the ripstop, which tends to be thinner and has little squares in the weave. When I wrote the original tutorial I thought I specified that in there somewhere. Wink

You can also order it from Joann's website, http://www.joann.com/sport-nylon-many-colors/prd13084/#pro_colors or maybe use the product info there to take in to the store and have a sales associate help you track it down.
