Does anyone have a resource for the pilot skull caps as worn on Hoth? I was looking for a good option for a cover when in costume and not wearing the helmet.

Any resources or ideas for an alternative?

Thanks.

Brett

I believe it was an AN-H-15 cloth flight helmet. It is also used as the foundation for the Endor commando helmet. I'm sure someone here knows the details of how it differs from its Endor cousin.

Also, it's non-formal but some of us wear a black beret with our RL pilot wings when at more relaxed events like conventions.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not a big fan of the beret so I was looking for another option for non-helmet trooping.

I'd love to get a skull cap.

It is a variation on the AN-H-15, but with a complete cloth covering. There are some threads here in the forums, but you'll have to search for them. Look for "pilot soft-cap" or "baklava".

It was most likely custom-made. The pattern was copied from British WWII-era cloth/leather helmets.
A few years ago, I bought one of these helmets and compared it to screenshots and production pictures. The panels match up perfectly, while the AN-H-15 does not.
Unfortunately, I had bought the wrong size (too small) so I could not translate it directly into a pattern for a cap that I could wear. Maybe a few women could use it.

I think that it is custom made because 1. The fabric and bias edging on the screen-used cap match the Rebel Hoth Soldier's hat but not to any flight helmet that I have found. 2. The cap is tied on with a simple string in a knot under the chin. There are many closeups of Luke where this can be seen. There are no snaps or velcro.

Yes, that's pretty good. The RAF helmets are a bit tighter at the back of the neck, though, from the strips going over head tapering in the back.
There are actually four strips over the head, but if your fabric is stretchy enough, two of them could be incorporated into the ear panels (that is what I did when I sewn mine). The panel over the forehead is not broken in two.

Some of the screen captures suggested that the underhelmets did have a seam running across the front...

most images were not too much help...
so...
one just "wings it"...

The one above is not mine...I made it for someone else...

mine is a little different...
and I did start both of them with an AN H-15 pattern..
