Greeting everyone,

I'm Zach Wagner TB7024 in the 501st. I'm from WI and I've done some research on the xwing pilot costume and plan to start purchasing parts for it soon. I'm planning on buying a costume base flight suit and vest then modify them to be screen accurate. I also have my eyes on some jack boots I will probably pick up.
Looking forward to meeting new people!

Are there any xwing pilots in WI currently?

You're the only one, although I know Beth's been talking about making one up.

Have you thought about a helmet yet?

Yes I want to get one eventually, however I need to do more research on buying one. If you wouldn't mind messaging me some details that'd be great!

Well, I'd prefer to post the non-secure stuff here so its available for others to learn from:

There's a few different options that are easy to obtain that you can pick from and they've all got their own pros and cons.

First you've got your standard Rubies. These are relatively easy to come by but I don't suggest using it unless you already have one. They're decent helmets, but they run pretty small and as with all Rubies, the plastic is crappy and prone to warping. The worst part is that you can get a Jedi Mickey kit for less or any of the other kits for not much more than the cost of one of these.

Then there's the JediMickey. This is what Phyllis and I have. Its a relatively cheap kit. Its way more accurate than the Rubies, but of the other kits available its probably the least accurate and usually the pulls aren't perfect so they need a little TLC.

Here's a build tutorial thread so you have an idea
http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18735

Next is Ritchie's Armor. This is a great kit and the only one that features a moving visor. You can get this in kit form or built or even painted, but I've heard some bad things about this seller's reliability and lately about the quality of their builds, but its a pretty accurate kit. I believe its actually the most expensive over all but not by much.

Finally, you have Mr.Bojangles. These are the newest kids on the block and from what I've seen the most accurate kit available. It comes built and unpainted they also come with the mohawk cap unattached because it makes painting easier.

Here's an example of the Bojangles:
http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28578

My personal suggestion is to go with either a JediMickey or a Bojangles. Really depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. There's really not much of a difference in accuracy between the two other than very slight details that very very few people will ever notice.

Also if you haven't purchased a chestbox yet, I fully suggest getting one from Mr.BoJangles. You can also get the accurate belt buckle from him as well. His chestboxes come fully finished and you won't find a better one anywhere unless you make it yourself.

Thanks for the helpful info. After doing some research I've found a few things I'll probably purchase for my costume today:
compad, gloves, boots, CostumeBase flightsuit and vest.

If anyone has any comments let me know what you think!

Haha thanks!

My fiancee said she wants to be an x-wing pilot as well, so we'll do our costumes together!

I ordered my boots today. I decided on German Military Parade Boots which were a little more than I was looking to spend, but they're exactly what I wanted and I believe they look very accurate. I also ordered costumebase jumpsuit/vests for my fiancee and I, then we stopped at JoAnne to buy materials to make leg flare holder and flares.

I asked VaderDave if he or sitharmory are going to make more gloves - they're working on a new production run and will post on JRS when they're in production.

Welcome to the forums....

Your boots are the same height as mine (13") and I wouldn't advise any shorter than that....pilot boots are more like around 15" tall...

It sounds like you guys have sewing skills....
so...
here are some links you might find useful in gathering items needed to make some of the pieces from scratch...and to modify the CB flak vest.

For the vest:

Adjustment buckle for back of vest:

http://www.ahh.biz/products/hardware/military/Locks_Ladder_1_MILSPEC.htm

Insertion lock for sides of vest...go to page...scroll down to "
Medium thumb catch. Each catch includes a back-up washer. Available in Antique Brass, Brass and Nickel.
Catch is 1-1/16" wide by 1-3/8" long"

http://www.hardwareelf.com:8080/elf/latchesandlocks.jsp

Strapping for belt and ejection harness (choose silver gray):

http://www.strapworks.com/Lightweight_Polypropylene_p/lwp2.htm

And...from the same place...the strapping for the mini flares (also silver gray):

http://www.strapworks.com/Heavyweight_Polypropylene_p/hwp1.htm

lol...

I had a "factory" going at one point...

Do you think I should cancel my order and buy a different pair, or will these be approved?

Mine are 13" tall and were approved...
so...
you should be ok...
finding boots is tough...that's for sure..

I didn't want to buy another pair of boots...so I used my RFT boots which are only 13" high...
I kind of keep looking for used/cheap taller boots on e-bay...but so far no luck.

I believe the shorter boots are actually the right boots. Taller boots like mine are the ones that are questionable. But as Phyllis said, finding boots is a bear.

Crix, our gloves are VaderDave's. Those are the best gloves you can get.

I'm hoping these gloves will be approved until VaderDave's gloves are back in production: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150599131933&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Waiting to hear back from i****n***d***** on the JRS about combining shipping on 2 compads. If I don't hear from him I may go with RA because his compads are half as expensive. I asked for a photo to verify quality before I order any.

Going to order some parts ordered tonight.
