I'm starting on this RFT. I got the used navy chambray shirts. I'm going to use the back of the extras to create the bib and the cuff-less sleeves.

I have a question on the black BDU shirt trimming. How far back is good for the sleeves? Just stitch up the sleeve where it attaches or is it cut back more?

Same with where the buttons and button holes were. Should it be trimmed back much?

I'm bigger/taller than the dummy, so don't pay much attention to the shoulder width on it.

And, I found replica german jack boots in size 12!!! I could never find them above 10 1/2. So I'm pretty pleased with the find and they are 100% leather all the way to real leather heal and sole. They are fresh out of the box so need some polish.

On my vest, the sleeves are cut where they meet the torso, and the button area is not cut back at all.

Just ripped the seams and buttons off.

What Liz said. Just use a seam ripper to take off the sleeves, then fold the edges of the armhole under and sew them down. I used a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine.

Ok, I'm at the 2nd stage of this build....

I've trimmed the vest, added the bib to the shirt, and polished up the jack boots.

Just waiting on helmet kit and belt, boxes and holster.

If I sew the cuffs closed will this pass approval? I plan on creating new cuff-less sleeves, but see that its optional and want to get this done Smile

Please, let me know if you see anything I need to fix.

I'm almost done except for the helmet. I got a kit from Tambo and its not like most kits I have ever gotten. There are not mold lines on it, its just a bunch of rough cut rounded plastic with the basic shape to tell me which part is probably which.

Is there a good source of pictures so I can start taping some lines on these and cutting? Maybe even some measurements? I'd like some sort of guide before I start cutting this stuff.

(I have screen shots, but if someone could even do some basic measurements between parts and write them into a picture it would be a huge help)

Thanks
Joe

What I've found that helps is to take a picture of your unfinished helmet kit and put it on your computer screen next to/overlaid over a reference photo. That way you can be more exact in where you put your reference points to get it to match up. You can use Photoshop / Paint.NET / GIMP or any image editor that allows for layers and transparency.

But remember that the RFT helmets we see on screen were trimmed by hand as well and no two are alike. So as long as the overall look is correct you should be fine.

Ok. Had to free-hand most of the shape of this from the casting I got, but I think its going to look good.

I almost removed that sagging in the front/top of the face area, but it looks fine when its on so I left it. And, the black cover was getting shorter and shorter trying to get a good shape, its about at it's limit.

Hope it's good enough *crosses fingers*

Hmmm... nice.
One more salad bowl in line.

Interesting photo - terrible background.
(Tip for everyone: that kind of brick wall is a royal pain in the exaust port to cut out for photoshopping.
And, I don't know why, brick walls are quite popular, in RFT photos)
