NEW ORLEANS (Dagobah Base & Bast Alpha Garrison)
Here's our own version of a blast door from the death star. The set is a great backdrop for photos or "Shoot the Trooper" Each flat measures 4x8 and is easily transported in the back of a pickup truck. There are a total of 6 sections to this set. The 1/4" luan ply was stapled (finishing nails) along with some wood glue. The lumber was connected together using sheetrock screws and wood glue. The Paint was Latex indoor.
The Light Panel Flats
The frame is 4'x8' using 1"x4" pine. The face is a sheet of 1/4" 4'x8' Luan Plywood. The plywwod is glued and air stapled to the frame. The cutouts were made using a router. As it stands now we are just usin painted white luan on the inside of the flat. We have fluorescent lights but we just ran out of time to install them.
The Outer Door
The frame was built using 1"x6" pine with 1/4" Luan ply. We added floor vents at the bottom. You can find these at Lowes. They are floor vents for RVs. The two 4'x8' doorway sections are screwed together, top and bottom.
Along the inner edge of the doorway 1/4" Luan was added and the holes were routed out.
Door Surface
The 2 4'x8' flats were built with 2"x2" pine frames, with 1/4" Luan. The two sections are screwed together and screwed to the back of the outer door frame. The two outer light panels are screwed to either side of the door. The back of the set is supported by two braces attched to the back of the set.
This shows the frame for the door flat.

That's awesome! You have to post some pics once you get the lights added to the side panels. Would look way cool with that! _________________

UPGRADED SET!!
Well Shoot the Trooper was a big hit at this years New Orleans Comic Con. We received a lot of compliments on the set. This year we incresed the size of the set as well as the playing field.
Last years space was about 10 feet wide by 15 feet deep.
Because of the events success, Wizard World provided us with two 8 foot tables making our size about 15 deep by almost 20.
Here are some of the changes:
1) The doors were replaced with a vinyl background with gromets attached to a 8X10 frame. I used the small bungees with balls. The frame was made with 3/4 inch conduit tubing with screw in elbows. No center frame was needed. It was placed 4 feet behind the blast door. Two 1x2s were screwed into the top of the balst door frame and bungees were used to attach the frame to the 1x2s. It was important to provide enough space to retrieve darts that land between the doorway and the background.
2) A 12inch x 2 inch hole was cut on the door flat and a working light panal with blinking LEDs was added.
3) Two single fluorescent fiixtures (24 inches long) were added to each light panel. 1/8 inch white plexiglass was used to diffuse the light. It is important to paint the inside of the light panel as well as a back cover white. It will help diffuse the light so that you don't see the light sources on the edges. A 1/4 luan cover to seal the back of the flat was screwed in place with drywall screws. The back of all of the set pieces were painted flat black to make it look better when viewed from behind.
4) The flats that used to be the doors were turned into extra walls.
5) A 2x4 sign was printed and placed above the door flat.
6) We used a sound system to play Death Star background sound. I edited it a bit to make it longer then looped it on my Ipod. Worked great! A long handle dustpan and a broom saved our backs retrieving the darts.

"Look at the size of that thing!"
That´s really a huge "prop", and done very, very nicely!
I really can imagine the fun all of you have there.... _________________ Okami Dai
