Hello there!
It´s nothing important, but I asked myself:

If the soldiers defending the Tantive IV were uniformed rebels - how could Leia state that she was on a diplomatic mission?

OR:
Are those brave soldiers original security personal from Alderaan?
Or even members of the diplomatic security services?

What would be the correct term for those Troopers?
What´s their origin?

There´s no clear definition on Jedipedia...
If you have any information about this, please help me out!

I am just thinking aloud here.

We know that the Rebels were not out there advertising their presence or capablilities, just their existence and their goals.

We know Lie was an overt member of the galactic government in some capacity.

We know that Leia was a covert leader of the Rebel cause.

We can assume that the diplomatic mission she reffered to was either a lie to Darth Vader or it was merely a ruse or a cover mission to get her in the the area.

Since the rebellion was still in it's fledgeling stage there was probably a lot of secrecy, "need to know" information and also the hand picking of the right personnel who could be both loyal to the Rebellion as well as the maintain the cover of their offical position.

The Rebel Fleet troopers were probably loyal members of the Rebellion but also member of whatever government ageny that orginaly employed them.

The uniforms worn by the Tantive IV crew memebrs were probably the uniforms of either Alderaan or the Galactic government which employed them and not offical uniforms of the Rebellion since they probably did not have an offical uniform per se.

The "correct" term would be Marines Cool

Actually, there is reference made in one of the reference books (the name escapes me right now) that originally, the uniform of the Rebel Alliance is a directly based on the Alderaanian Guard uniform.

I think that while the uniform started off as an Alderaanian concept, it was eventually incorporated into the whole Rebellion, probably some time before the attack on the Tantive IV (as their numbers at Yavin would indicate). So those who fought in that skirmish would have been in the unusual position of being both Alderaanian security AND official troopers of the Rebel Fleet - thus, they could appropriately be called, Rebel Fleet Troopers.

Mr. Green

EDIT: remember also, the Rebellion was still a covert, largely unknown entity, and they would not have been easy to recognize, even by uniform. This event was early in their struggle - in fact, the opening crawl tells us they had just barely won their first victory. My feelings tell me that they wouldn't have had a general-use, distinctive uniform just yet, but would want to continue under the guise of Alderaan's security force when possible, which would tie them to a system known for peace and diplomacy. A smart move. So to the public - Alderaan's forces. In truth - Rebel Fleet Troopers.

Actually Alderaan had no armed forces by 0 BBY. Smile They abolished their army and fleet and secretly transferred the leftover weapons and equipment to the Alliance. That's why RFTs wear Alderaanian uniforms. Wink

Yeah I have to agree with the above thread. I have always wondered how the name came to be. I think 'Rebel Alliance Marine' would work just as well.

Thank you all for your opinions so far!

I prefer the idea that the RFT´s are Alderaan Security Personal.
I don´t think that "having no weapons" means a complete lack of weapons, i.m.o. this should be seen in a military context. So Alderaan didn´t have an Army or Navy, but of course there must have been some security services for protecting the royal family. Maybe not on Alderaan, but definitly when beeing on abroad missions.
With the destruction of Alderaan all security services "officially" joined the alliance, and their uniform became the "face" of rebel troopers...
As mentioned above: a smart move!

Oh, and I never thought that the term RFT should be changed!
It´s all about .... curiosity!

There's a bunch of possible names, just slight variations on each other:

Alderaan Defence Forces; Alderaan Security Force; Alderran Guard; Alderaan Patrol; etc.

The central theme would be to imply a non-aggressive role for their armed forces. No capital ships or planetary seige stuff, just border patrol, police, anti-piracy, customs, etc.

After the destruction of Alderran/Battle of Yavin it's quite probable that the uniform was adopted by the Alliance in memorium.

I've only really heard Rebel Fleet Troopers and Alderaanian Security Service. I am assuming that the Rebellion adopted the uniform for patriotic purposes. It would make good PR sense.
