Hi folks,

I'm looking into making an ANH Leia belt for a friend who wants to submit her Leia costume to the RL. I had a question specifically about the belt.

We're going to be making the belt out of leather. I've seen some fantastic tutorials out there by many members (and THANK YOU to all of you, those are a HUGE HELP Smile ). I've noticed that, with the leather belts, not many have seemed to opt to paint/dye the inside of the belt. Obviously it's not a required part to paint, since it is not seen, but I'd have imagined that with a white dress, the unfinished leather would leave some brown around the waist area of the dress.

Have any of you Leia costumers with leather belts experienced this? Do you think painting the inside would help curb this from happening? If not, what do you think would be a good option to keep the leather from "rubbing off" on the dress?

If you're using raw leather that hasn't been dyed before, you shouldn't get any bleed from the leather I shouldn't think. But, if you want to dye the back white, feel free. Either way, just be sure you dye the edges white, since those WILL be seen.

For sure. Though I've noticed a lot of belts in the films did not have dyed edges (Luke's ROTJ belt and Qui-Gon's TPM belt come to mind). Were Leia's belt edges dyed in the film?

i didnt dye the back of my belt and the edges are painted white, which i think looks the best and is how her belt is, from what i can see on display. my belt has never rubbed off on my white dress. i hope this helps.

Hm, I just noticed the stitching on Leia's belt. I'll have to add that. Wink

I know I'm a few months late to this - but there are two versions of the white belt. The one worn in ANH which seems to be soft leather folded over a belt/buckram type frame and stitched on the edge (and an 8th belt plate center back over the snaps). There is also the version shown in all the SW costume exhibits which we believe is the one worn at the end of Empire strikes back. A thicker belt leather, no stitching, no 8th plate in the center back.

Chiming in late due to just being accepted. Wink

I opted to dye the backside of my belt. Basically because the JetSet fabric I used snags easily and I wanted to minimize any of the edges or backing of the belt snagging on the fabric.

It also didn't hurt to do that just to be thorough.
