Hi all -

Just wanted to share that my latest costume received approval as formal today! I designed this one from scratch using measurements taken from screenshots from The Clone Wars, Season 3. With the exception of the boots and beard, I made everything myself from scratch, including the patterns. I'm pleased with how it all turned out! The lightsaber sound and control board is from a Hasbro 2010 Obi-Wan lightsaber connected to a 3W Luxeon royal blue LED. There are a few more pictures at http://keithwatt.org/CW3Obi-Wan/index.html.

Roger probably knows more about this than I do, but I also submitted a set of formal criteria for the costume, since none existed. Hopefully we'll see the official statement soon. I'm excited to be able to troop as the "latest" incarnation of Obi-Wan!

Best regards,
Keith

(Edit: I've added a picture of Obi-Wan from CW3 for comparison.)
[Edit 2: Whoops! Just noticed I messed up the link for the lightsaber pic]

Did you make the saber too?

Very cool costume!

Hi Tabitha -

Yes, I made the saber as well. I used a Master Replicas 1/3 scale Obi-Wan lightsaber as the model. I think it came out pretty close!

The paint is baked on using an oversized toaster oven (I baked each piece individually). The hard part was actually cramming all the electronics in. I used a 3.7V rechargeable battery so that I was able to use a single AA-sized battery for power, so that helped a lot. There are some pictures on my website that show the lightsaber when lit. It's actually a really nice deep blue instead of the washed out blue the camera picks up.

By the way, if anyone wants help on patterns or building the pieces of the costume, just let me know -- I'm glad to help out.

Take care,
Keith

wow! that looks really good!

Do you mind sharing how you made the forearm guards? I'm thinking of working on a generic jedi general.

Sure, for the bracers I used four large, clear plastic pitchers that I found on clearance at Target. Each bracer uses two pitchers placed "mouth to mouth" and joined with Bondo. I used a Dremmel tool to cut the plastic to size, so the elbow extensions are actually a solid piece with the upper part of the armor. I carved channels into the pitcher to form the inner edges of the elbow extensions.

I've heard that toilet bowl wand holders work as well, but it's really just a matter of finding something that fits your arm. I measured the widest part of my hand, the length of my arm from wrist to elbow, and around my bicep, and then just went shopping until I found a pitcher or vase that worked. I kept all my sketches and measurements (though I don't have them handy), so if that's useful to anyone, please let me know.

Let me know if I can answer more questions!

Keith

great! Thanks so much! I was thinking some kind of cup would work, I have very small wrists and arms so it looks like cups will be the best bet for me.

Very sharp! Excellent job of improvising parts, too!
