Hmm, that could be.
Well, I guess sometime I'll just have to go out to a fabric store and compare. Perhaps there are different shades of the insulation because the vests look pretty dark, but if I remember right, the insulation I've seen has been more of a light or medium gray. Not that I've ever actually looked very hard at said insulation, I've never had a reason to.

Sorry, my mistake. I was talking about the A-Wing vest. I fixed my post.

The material was soft, but it definitely was not the wool you're thinking of since I use to think that way too, and the photos above do make it look like what I use to think about. There is "chunks", to use a crude term, of yellow, white red and blue material in the fabric. It could be some kind of strange wool fabric still, but the colors are not just threads or regular. I think the acoustic insulation material comes in a variety of styles, some of which is soft. It wouldn't be harder to sew then wool would be.

maybe felt "underlayment"...

found some but it has green crap on one side of it

EVERYTHING looks different on film than in real life. thats something we run into all the time around here. The RFT helmets are really grey in real life so they FILM white. The Y-Wing suits are almost Khaki/tan colored not grey. Similar to the tech costumes. They filmed looking grey but they really arent.

Stuff looks different when you really see it in person. Like the Han Solo jacket on Hoth. Completely different Blue vs Brown.

Its one of those , well do you want to LOOK right or BE right. And have people asking you why you're the wrong color and having to tell them I'm actually the RIGHT color, everyone else is wrong. lol

Oh, like material stiffener that you usually put between two pieces of fabric to make them thicker and stiffer? That's an interesting idea, would be easier to work with than insulation. Plus it comes in different colors and shades.
I never thought of that.

Something kind of like this (albeit darker)...

Now that makes more sense to me. Laughing
I actually used some of this to thicken up my current vest, though I used white if I remember right. Or was it black...?

Well I think its going to be kind of thick, even looking at the side of this:

The underlayment I've seen online is around 1/4 inch thick. It could even be something they just don't make anymore... or is harder to find. if it was an Auto insulation (very possible) then since cars use different stuff now, it may be extremely expensive or hard to find out side gutting an old car in a junk yard.

Here is another roll, this one with blue backing (think it comes off and is sticky on one side)

Ah, maybe I'm getting them mixed up. I'm not the sewing expert in the house, heh. I could've sworn I saw something like this sitting near the white/black interface when I last saw it (granted that was over a year ago when I looked for something), so that may be why I got them mixed up. I thought they were both the same thing, just different thicknesses. Again, I'm not the sewing person. Laughing

Sorry, my mistake.
By do I feel like an idiot now. Embarassed

I noticed that the gray material is used on the underside of the white Y-Wing vest. It's not seen but is the base the white material is sewn too.

I heard about the party you guys attended.
Did you meet Jerry Treiber while you were there?
He lives a half mile from me.
Do you suppose Jerry saw these very same Y wing vests and flight suits?
Hmmmm, Cool

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Will definitely have to grill him ...

Well....I had decided to move forward on the flak vest that I was going to try to produce...

but with Skaught's recent close encounter with the real deal..
I guess one needs to wait and see what he can sketch up.

What I did do was take the drawing done by CrimsonPhoenix to a Fed Ex location with a copier that can blow things up big time..

I printed out the drawing and blew it up 425% ...
I then figured I would trace another copy of it to cut apart to make pattern pieces...

obviously....with Skaught actually seeing one of these..
this could all be wrong..

The party was at Rancho Obi Wan, Steve Sansweet's place. I was there, too (that was the reason I flew out there), but the vest is in the Skywalker Ranch archives. Skywalker Ranch wasn't part of the party. I set that up through someone I know for a private visit.

My jealousy oozes through every pore! I've been to Skywalker twice but have not managed to get through that archive door!

Awesome that you were able to get pics though. While you can't share them, you can certainly come up with some eerily accurate paintings!

As far as the "I have this thing but can't show you" bit goes, it is annoying but better someone has the reference than no-one! Wink
