Finished my Chewbacca mask 2.0. I wanted to get more accurate with the features and hair. The mouth went through major changes. The nose is more accurate. Teeth were totally resculptured. I wanted to be able to go from ESB Chewie to ROTJ Chewie, so the hair was managed in a way to convert from one to another easily.

This version has a totally awesome working snarl that works effortless. See the close up pics . The underskull was totally redone and made from 50/50 foam. Its super light and the jaw works with roller blade bearing for really smooth action.

Each mask build you learn alot about hair placement, fit and accuracy. Plan on doing 2 more. As you see from the comparison pic the difference is pretty drastic. Let me know what you think.

Looks fantastic!

I will have to go back and look, are the lips supposed to be that dark?

Very impressive, Marty. I look forward to seeing this in person at DragonCon.

Could you please elaborate on the underskull and snarl? (any pics?). How is your snarl mechanism attached to the skin?

Where does your skin end? Is it in the middle of the forehead like the original or does it extend over the entire underskull?

What is 50/50 foam?

You seem to have very good control over the hair flow on your mask, especially the chin area. What all do you use? Bobby pins, hair clips, hair spray? Did you do what the ROTS crew did and punch hair across the grain?

Did you use a curling iron on some of the chin hair? Any tricks for getting the clumped, wavy look beyond "roll it up after you troop."

What colors did you use on your suit? Did you blow dry your hair? Looking at your photos I am amazed at just how good your suit looks. The clumpiness and waviness is so close to the appearance of the OT suits it's amazing.

Bob, there were about 5 or 6 masks used in the movies. Each one was slightly different. I referenced several screen captures. The lips appear darker in the studio photos. They are more on the darker side as the Esb and Rotj masks I referenced. I also did not want the lips to go too light when flash photos were taken. The inconsistency with the masks from all the different pictures from the movies are crazy. But the basic sizing and proprtions are what I really try to capture.

Marty, this looks fantastic! I was thinking of trying my hand at a new mask simply to help reduce the weight and I was planning on using 50/50 foam for the underskull. I'd be really interested in seeing any pics you have of the uderskull or a description of how you produced this beautiful mask.

What is 50/50 foam? I've been Googling and have not been able to find anything.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing that Marty's using, but what I know as 50/50 foam is a 2-part urethane or polyurethane foam. I've seen some flexible polyurethane foam props made from molds and it really takes detail well. That what gave me the idea to use it as the underskull - it's very lightweight and easy to manipulate. I'm glad to know it's doable.

Marty, amazing work!
Is that a TK neckseal you're sporting in the "mask off" pic? Great idea- I've often thought I might wear mine to keep the mask hair off my neck.
Thanks for sharing and for inspiring!

Yes I wear my TK neckseal so the leather strap that holds my bandolier in place around my neck doesnt rub my neck.
