Hello, everybody.

Every year since 2005 the Town Hall of São Paulo organizes a massive cultural event known as “Virada Cultural”, which lasts for 24 hours featuring several attractions and presentations, allowing many different individuals and groups to show their talents and skills throughout the city.

Last year, the alliance of SW fan clubs all over Brazil had been invited for its first mass-scale appearance! Of course, we do have our Jedicons and many members all over the states…yet it should be something totally different! Something not restricted to SW fans, but something new and big, to attract lots of attention and share our very happiness when it comes to trooping to other people, too.

In fact, we had an excellent event. Many people followed us along the streets we trooped on, chanting and cheering wherever we passed…we were offered security and support, and despite a few issues, it was a very successful event as a whole.

But this year, things went off a bit differently – allow me to explain why.

We were once again invited to take place on the event this year, and organized things among ourselves in great expectation. Security and support were offered all right, but as we made it there we saw that the event would have problems from the beginning. The security we had was comprised of a dozen security guards in contrast to the Police which had been offered, but we had to make do with that.

The second problem was that the beginning of out troop was delayed in 1 hour…blame it on the organization. While leaving the dressing tents specially reserved for us, we were well received by all the fans around us along with many other people. And that itself was the third – and greatest problem of it all… far TOO many people. The estimate was that around four million (yes, 4.000.000) people were on the streets that night…

Even though we had a pre-determined route to follow, people would cross our path at all times. We had been instructed by our present CO and XO not to stop at any time, allowing photographs only at specific moments. However, even though he could tell US not to stop, there would be no way people would know that. Compared to the enormous mass of people growing around us, the security staff issued to assist us seemed quite useless. There would be nothing a dozen unarmed security guards could do if any harm came our way.

We decided to assign our troopers up front. You know, even if you don’t know what Star Wars is all about, you’d certainly be surprised by several sturdy-looking soldiers in white armor marching up front wielding blaster rifles! The Jedi would come right behind, along with other characters and creatures, being followed by the fans that had had previously signed-up to follow us along. But what end up happening is that our fellow fans had to form a barrier around us all over the event to prevent intruders from invading our space! The majority of us was quite tense with the situation and lack of general support.

After we made it back to our tents, we sighed in relief. After that, we had a general debriefing on the troop itself, and decided not to gather the following morning (as we had agreed upon with the event coordinators) in our costumes to show up for an interview. The town hall had failed us - so we owed them all nothing.

A good thing from all of this is that we were all united. Our love for what we do kept us together at all moments regardless of the club we are part of. Nobody was ever harmed even though the risk was imminent, and we knew, after all, that our part had been done.

Here’s where you can see a few pictures:

We missed you, Master Plo.

Moth was right, we had tense moments.
But we also had so much fun. We laughed a lot during some parts of the route. We also had to hear many foolish things too.
But I think in general we had fun and we were a big attraction, no doubt about it.

It's a pity, because we don't have 'parades' like you all have in your countries and this was the only chance we had to parade, walking by the streets. Infortunatelly, there are no conditions for us, no like these we had, or worst, we didn't have.

The coordinator of the attraction, called DIMENSÃO NERD (Nerd Dimension) was really angry with all the lack of structure and it was clear that the town hall failed to both of us. He said to me: "The Star Parade is awesome, but not for this kind of event. I cannot risk you all again, depending on the town hall structure."

So, we both agreed (Star Wars Alliance groups and the Coordinator) that next year we won't be there as attraction.

Maybe we can meet to have fun together, watch some gig or other attraction. No more Star Parade during Virada Cultural.

Thanks Moth for the report! Wink
