Has anyone out there made the Queen Amidala Throne Room or "Red Invasion Gown"? My wife wants to make her first costume and thats the one she wants to do. It looks pretty complex and i was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to best go about it. Thanks in advance!

Following the above link should give you some insight into what it takes to construct this costume. I have not made this costume myself, but i'm sure someone else here from the detachment could offer some advice about it. Amadalia

When looking to replicate, I save every picture I can find and watch every documentary I can find. Take note of every seam, where every balance point falls. Padawan's Guide is a great reference.

You'll have to pay special attention to support garments. This gown requires a hoop skirt that will have to be made in a similar shape, out of a stiff fabric with rings of hoop steel (try corsetmaking.com). The main body of this dress, all panels should be shaped about the same, the top (under the collar will need a little shaping, but there are about 25 panels, they aren't shaped to the bust since she was 14 at the time. They start going down pretty straight, tapering slightly, and then sweeping outward. You will either have to make sure the fabric is a heavier weight, or sew a lighter weight fabric to a heavier base fabric. I'd suggest sticking with natural fibers if you plan on making the illuminated lanterns so nothing melts.

I will say this will take some pretty extreme patterning, you can't alter a ready-made pattern for this. Is your wife a seamstress? It's a pretty ambitious costume and would require a little (or a lot) patterning experience.

She is planning on getting some seamstress to help out with the gown. Thanks for the tips!

My wife and I have been watching your progress! Looks really awesome! She's excited, we are still in the process of saving up for it though...
