THE EVENT:
The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon--affectionately known as THON. THON is a yearlong effort by students at Penn State University to raise funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. Since 1977, THON has raised more than $78 million for The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

THE TROOPS:
Troopers from Echo Base, along with our 501st Garrison Carida brethren deployed to the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday morning to support the dancers, student volunteers and--most importantly--the kids battling cancer who benefit from the fundraising done through THON every year. Included in our crew for the day were:

Candy R. Echo Base - (Tusken--First Troop!)
Tom K. - Echo Base (Wedge Antilles X-Wing Pilot--First troop with new approval)
Marty M. - Echo Base (Chewbacca the Rock Star)
Tharren T. - Echo Base (OR Jedi)
Tim L. - Echo Base (Rebel Fleet Trooper)
Mark J. - Echo Base (Galen Marek/OR Jedi )
Mia J. - Echo Base (ANH Leia)
Todd L. - Carida (TK)
Travis M. - Carida (181st TIE Pilot)
Josh S. - Carida (ANH Vader )
Bianca S. - Squire
Garrett R. - Carida (Royal Guard--First Troop!)
Andrew M. - Carida (Royal Guard)
Wally P. - Echo Base (Capt. Rex - Animated)
Evil Dave J. - Carida (Biker Scout)
Shawn A. - Carida (Darth Nihilus )
Brad L. - Squire
David J. - Squire

THE DEPLOYMENT
We arrived about an hour before we were scheduled to hit the stage, so we had time to suit up and get pictures with some of the student volunteers, kids and dancers who were in the hallway. Then at 12:30pm we were introduced onstage in front of 708 dancers, 15,000 student volunteers and many of the 240 Four Diamonds families of pediatric cancer patients in attendance. Then it was an hour and a half of walking the dance floor, joining in with the hourly line dance, getting squirted by kids with water pistols (just don't try to get the drop on Rex, kids! Laughing ), posing for pictures and joining in the incredible energy of the largest student-run philanthropic event in the world. After a twenty-minute buckets-off break to rehydrate and sit down (out of sight of the dancers, of course), we were escorted to an elevator up to the concourse hallway where we trooped for people coming in and out of the stands. (I will always cherish the looks on people's faces when the elevator doors opened and fifteen Star Wars characters suddenly spill out like clowns out of a circus car!) Around 3:30 we headed back to our dressing area to suit down, then over to Herwig's in State College ("where bacon is an herb!") for some jagerschnitzel and debriefing.

Please have a look at some of the pictures from the event--I hope you can get a sense of the energy, excitement and determination these students have for finding a cure for pediatric cancer, and how honored we were to be part of this incredible weekend when these students raised a total of $9.6 MILLION DOLLARS to fight pediatric cancer...

Oh by the way--THON 2012 is scheduled for February 17th-19th, 2012 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Mark your calendars now!!

It was an amazing event! It goes up there as one of the best events I've ever trooped at.

The energy of the place was amazing! Even with no sleep the dancers were still alert and amazingly chipper.

That figure actually represents the culmination of several months of coordinated fundraising efforts across the Penn State system--but it is an amazing figure nonetheless. (Last year was $7.8 million, so that makes this year's total even more impressive...)

My dream is to have Echo Base (and someday the whole RL) involved in fundraising for THON throughout the year, so that when we show up next February we can do it with a check in hand to help in their goal. There's a laser-tag arena close to where I live, and I've heard of other bases/garrisons doing laser-tag charity events--that would be cool.

Anyway, something to shoot for for 2012...

We could also see about maybe having a spot on the mez where we could have the Emperor's chair...students want to sit, donate a one dollar to sit. Just an idea

This event is right in my backyard and I've tried for 4 years to get into it with no luck, GREAT JOB Tharren!
People wise this was one of the largest events I have done. Right up there with Star Wars in concert.

If there is coordination I am sure we could rock Star Wars AND raise money while we were there. There is a small lazer tag place in State College as well. Tharren are you talking about Fun Central in Clearfield? That would be super cool to do.

Garrison Carida has that throne chair. I'd be willing to get it, where ever it is, next year if we can do something like that.

Thanks, Cap'n! It was great to be able to put something together that people are excited about!

I was thinking about Fun Central just because it's right off the interstate and all, but the one in State College could be a possibility as well. There's also one in Altoona. I figure I could get in touch with all three of them and see who would be interested in working with us on it. (Insert image of a bunch of TKs at one end of the hallway, Tim and a bunch of RFTs at the other shooting it out with Vader stalking out the door... Who wouldn't pay to get to be part of that!!?!) I know some other bases have held laser tag fundraisers--I'd be interested in hearing how they set it up to see how we could make it work.

I kind of gave our THON contacts a week to decompress, but this week I'll be contacting them to start laying the groundwork on what our involvement will look like next year. If we use the throne we just need to make sure we get a shot of President Spanier in the chair flanked by IRGs and Vader kneeling in front of him!!

We had good participation from Echo Base and our Carida brethren this year, but I want to open up a Legion-wide invite (RL and 501st) for next year. I'm sure there are Penn State alums who would travel from all over the place to come for this event!

The bad part about doing a laser tag around either of these areas is that there aren't a lot of troopers around. Trying to find a place somewhere near Harrisburg or Philly would get better participation because of ease of access. Think one of the outlying PSU Campus leading that charge?

Yeah I think if we get the throne chair and Tables up on the racetrack area we could raise quite a bit of money on site for THON. Now is the time to start working it.

Proud to report that our little maneuver at the Bryce Jordan Center last February has been immortalized in Issue 13 of Comlink!

Way to go troopers--this is one of the reasons I'm proud to be a member of Echo!
