That picture originates from a Disney event in the 80s IIRC. Not really something you should consider too much of a canon source. _________________ James Norman

the photo is a comedy of errors for sure.....
but...
I am assuming that at least the Y-Wing Vest itself is essentially "correct"....
all else aside (ejection harness and gaiters) _________________

Stick a fork in it...
it's done!!
I got tired of the all of the indecision on this ...
and just laid it out and went for it...
Some of the "work in progress" steps on the vest....
the back:
starting the layout:
my weathering technique wet:
and dry:
Starting to attach some of the pieces...the chest box being heavy...I went with this approach:
I did try to remove some of the weight of the chest box by removing resin:
all pieces on:
finished product assembled and fully dry:

One thing I have said for quite sometime is that I needed to make a new RFT vest using the new pocket layouts...
this projects is mainly for "giggles" because right now my current vest matches all of the other RFTs in the Base...and I think it is more important to match your Base mates.
I am basing the pockets on this Sideshow figure:
so...
I started the project this morning.
I chose this pattern as I had used it before for a Han Solo vest...ignore the decorations..
and am using View D because it has the correct basic shape.
So far all I have done is the layout
and the basic pieces cut:
Once I start to assemble, I will need to make some patterns for the pockets...
Started to look at pocket layouts...
decided that the two on the bottom needed to be wider...
but then started making the pockets...
Cut out all the pockets...
then pressed the raw edges
for the pocket flaps you sew the seam on both sides and the bottom....leaving the top seam un-sewed as you will make that sewing line when you attach the pocket to the vest...
Do the same thing for the pockets themselves except on the pockets you sew only the seam at the top....the other 3 sides will have the sewing line when you attach to the vest..
Then I started to look at the back pockets....
Where initially I was thinking that I would attach the large pocket at the bottom inside the side seams of the vest...I decided against that as the ones in the movie were in all likelihood added on to already made BDU (or similar) vests....so I cut the large bottom pocket narrower....
The large upper pocket just about goes from armhole to armhole...
Since both back pockets are "open" with no flap...
I sewed the top seam on each pocket only...
the other seams will be accomplished when the pockets are sewn to the vest...
Now I am assembling the rest of the vest as per the pattern's instructions...
Initially I was going to sew on the pockets before sewing in the facing...but decided to sew the facing on and then the sewing on the pockets will help keep the neck facing more in place...
and huge note...
I am using a bottomweight black twill fabric...
that fabric has a "texture" to it...
so ..
when cutting the pockets I had to make sure that I was cutting the pockets with that twill texture going the same way as the body of the vest...
If you don't do that...
the pockets will look a different color because that texture "bends" light and makes the fabric look a shade lighter if the twill texture is not going in the same direction...

I am almost done with this project...
I finished the basic vest....and had all the pockets prepared to go on
Started to lay out the front pockets
and
sew them on...
one thing I am not convinced about is...
the Sideshow figure has a tab closure on the tall pocket on the wearer's right side....
I have left that off for now....
For the back pocket on the bottom....my pocket turned out to be 22" wide...
so...
to make the 4 compartments, I sewed a vertical line every 5 1/2"
Then the top pocket in the back...
the Sideshow figure shows this pocket going just about full across the back from armhole to armhole
The only thing left to do is sew on the bottom two pockets on the front...
I am still contemplating if they need to be larger....
so...
after I do that...
it is back outside to shovel the additional 8" of snow and try to prepare for the eventual flooding on Thursday ....
and
then I can put the sewing machine away...
always a good day when I can do that..

Let the insanity begin....
I am attempting to make Hoth Commander/Snowspeeder Pilot boots....
These boots are different from the Hoth Trench Trooper boots is several ways so I have to start over with a new pattern and some trial and error.
Purchased: 3 yards of gray Duck Cloth - do not wash!! I wanted to leave the sizing in the fabric to help keep it stiffer.
2 yards of Pellon 808 Craft fuse iron on heavy duty interfacing
gray thread
2 packages EACH of gray Wrights Quilt binding and gray extra wide double fold bias tape
and
2 packages EACH of off white Wrights Quilt binding and off white extra wide double fold bias tape
Frankly....I haven't decided which color to use as the vertical trim (double fold bias tape) and the horizontal straps (quilt binding).
I am starting with a Butterick historic boot pattern.
and using view G - there are only 3 pattern pieces 17,18,19
The thing is that this pattern is used to make BOOTS
and
not
boot COVERS
so the pattern really can't be used "as is".
The first thing is that since the pattern is for a boot and not a cover...you really have to make it a LOT larger to be able to cover a hiking boot that will be used as the base for the boot cover.
These boots are for Steve Mamman and are a size 10.5
even though the pattern states it goes to size 11.5 the pattern is not nearly large enough.
So...to begin....which once again I must stress...
I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I AM DOING....
I took the boot pattern....
and copied it to a plain piece of paper
then took the plain piece of paper and started cutting it up to make all of the pieces larger
I started out one boot cover at a time....normally I would cut everything out (both left and right) but since I know for a fact that I am bound to screw up the first attempt....I am doing one at a time to waste less fabric...
I already did a first attempt out of scrap fabric just to get an idea of the assembly...this one only one layer of fabric and ended up too small...
So....this time I started the left boot cover cutting out the pattern on two layers of the gray duck cloth...
Then it was time to strengthen and stiffen what will become the inside layer of the boot cover with the craft fuse.
right sides together I stitched the toe piece almost all the way around
then turned it inside out and stitched the perimeter
Same thing with the "tongue piece"....leaving the top open for now...
Next was the large one-piece boot piece...
I sewed all the way around but left the back open for now
clipped the curves
then....as usual...I forgot that I wanted to hide a little Velcro on the front top of the boot...so I had to rip some of the seams apart and sew the Velcro on the inside panel so it is not seen from the outside.
That is where it sits right now...
because really one of the next basic decisions that needs to be made so I can sew it onto the main boot piece now is what color to use as the trim...
gray or cream colored....

Are there actually any photos of Rieekan's boots? all i've found is the action figure, which gives him tan boots similar to Luke's. All the photos I've seen are from the waist up |

No...there are no photos of his feet...
and...
I already had the "discussion" regarding his boots with the "powers that be" and they insist they are gray...
otherwise my submission of the Hoth Commander would have been formal....(aside from the belt loops which I could have added but didn't because they already said that my tan HTT boots would have to be gray...

Ok...perhaps the same "powers" could elaborate on the trim question? Just curious where they got their info then. I personally would lean toward the off white...but curious what others think. |

I agree....I kind of came to that decision this morning...
also....
as I predicted...
after stopping for the day yesterday (I am trying to take my time and make as few critical errors as possible)
I noticed I did make an error on the one piece...
sigh...

Yeah....me too...
other than being told...
they are gray....
lol..
and...
it does not look like this plan is going to work.....the fabric ends up too thick to try to gather it around the toe piece....I don't know that I scaled it properly....some pattern adjusting I am ok at...
but this ain't going well...
I may have to just make them like my Hoth Trench Trooper boots....
I might ask Kathy if she would take a stab at it .....for a fee of course....
