Since my finances are in the toilet...I have been staying home quite a bit lately...
and..
working on projects...
and about this time I am ready to give up on costuming as NOTHING is going well....
period..

I finished the pouches for Luke Zintak's Bespin Luke and am now dying the belt...the pouches came out awful in my opinion...
I guess I have a LOT to learn about wet forming....
I just could not get the bottom corners "crisp" enough and that led to stitching problems....and that led to hair tearing...
hopefully they will be good enough for approval and until Luke can get something better in the future...
I am now trying to dye the belt blank...
and..
again...
running into difficulties with the dye....
I had to stick with the Tandy eco flow "Timber Brown" as that is what I did the first pouch with..
but in the future...I might move to Fieblings dye...
the water based Eco Flow just doesn't seem to cover well...and I tried several different methods of application.
Today I am going to try one last coat after I let the belt blanks dry over night.

I have also been encountering no end of frustration with the General Rieekan costume...
for one...
I sized to to someone larger than me...so the yoke should probably end higher and the top pocket flaps should probably be smaller...
the two layers of fabric and batting that got quilted for the top also make things pretty stiff...
I ended up have to put two large darts in the back cuz...again..this jacket is really made for a man and I had to make some adjustments back there...
would LOVE to add some darts in the front too...but...that would be too visible...there were no female Hoth Commanders that wore costumes like Riekeen in the movie...so...this is ..once again...a man's costume...

I am also having no end of trouble with the collar....
I have had the collar off about three times trying to make it look better...and so far...
it still looks like cr*p....
I plan to work on the pants today and leave the jacket alone so I can sit and think about it...
but...I will probably remove the collar once again..and this time make it shorter with less batting....that is about all I can think of...

anyway...this is how it currently looks...I am using the belt blank for my Rebel Commander with the belt buckle I made for this costume...one of the belt blanks above is actually earmarked for the General Riekeen costume....

As noted...
I needed to make a octagonal buckle for Riekeen...my Rebel Commander has an oval buckle...
so..
I used the ever popular Tandy belt blank...
cut off the corners as best I could...there are a couple of posts in the back that you have to avoid cutting...so there isn't much of a corner that you can take off...
and..
also have to work on the rank badge...
which is some aluminum...glued to a thick piece of sintra...
and then I took these pearl buttons from WalMart and used a glass paint on them to color them red...
I will then drill holes into the aluminum/sintra backing and glue those buttons into the piece...
not great..
but "real" rank badges are quite expensive and there is only one place that I know makes them...

so...
since this costume will likely be worn only once (or maybe even never...lol...) I am going the cheap route...

I also plan to use this belt/buckle combo with my Bespin Luke blaster and holster for my X-Wing pilot/Snowspeeder Pilot costume too....

Honestly...I want this General Riekeen/Hoth Commander project done..
I have had the fabric laying around here for what seems like years...
and the project was set in motion May of 2012 and
I just want it done!!

I agree with Crix. I am not 100% sure what the General's costume looks like but yours looks amazing! Lol. I think the pouches look fine. I'm sure if Luke was gonna be picky, he would have went to some expensive place and bought some. Yours are great!

Well...my head was splitting from working on this stuff...so I did a fitness walk for a couple miles to clear my head....and
now I don't want to work on this stuff anymore today...

But...
I did complete all of Luke's belt that I can for now...
The pouches come off the belt....so they are just floating on there...but I will have to wait till I have Luke Z try in on before I can finish cutting it and putting in the holes for the buckle to and also to install the lightsaber clip and d-ring as those are intended NOT to be moveable....so I will need to make sure of their exact location before riveting them on. I had to cut and gind down a spring clip to use as the lightsaber clip...

anyway...
here it is for now:

The General Rieekan pants are almost done....
but the hard part is ahead...the waist band and zipper

The rank badge is done...

I will need to remove the collar on the jacket...
again...
and try to do something with that...

after that...
It's done..
I have my Hoth boots and Snowspeeder pilot gloves to wear with this costume and that is pretty much all that is required..
So...I hope to have the first Hoth Commander costume here at the RL
....

Very Happy

done..
and submitted...
I removed the collar yet again last night...narrowed it and re-shaped it and sewed it back on for the 4th time..

Rolling Eyes

It did finally come out much better...
not perfect ...
but better...

Truth be told...I don't think this costume will be formal because I have tan gaitered boots and the costume standard calls for gray...
and...
since I have lots of formal costumes..
and didn't want to make another pair of boots...
I used my tan gaitered Hoth Trench Trooper boots...

So this costume #27 right? What's next? Are you planning something huge for #30?

gaaaaaaaa......
I don't even want to think about the next one...
I have had the fabric for this one for years...and I started on it almost a year ago....
too many other projects interrupted it...
I do have fabric for another Jedi tunic...this time I thought I would try one of those "to the floor" jobs....
but...
honestly...
I am burned out...

my collection of obscure and unloved costumes is now complete...

and back to this project from hell...

The new ERS headgear for the Joliet Library event...

and it is going pretty bad...lol...

First off, since this is for an actual exhibit (I might decide to start wearing this one after the Library event...who knows)
...I felt I needed to be as close to the movie version as possible...so I needed a real ANH
But...not wanting to cut apart a pristine example of WWII memoribilia, I sought out one that was not in really good shape. I found one (size medium) that had some wear and tear issues and was probably not stored under the best of conditions.

Because it is a medium...I wanted to make it larger...

So I cut the halves apart....
and made a spacer of sorts to make it larger...
note the difference in hard helmets ...the one on the left is my regular ERS I troop with and the white one on the right is the one that will be fitted to the new soft helmet for the exhibit...

Here is the spacer strip being sewed in:

And the end result.....the spacer and the hat bill (which I since removed again because I felt that the hat bill was too large)

I then notched the bottom of the donut to accompany the soft helmet and tried it out for size

and

from the top....

As noted...
the bill is off of it again as I do have to re-make it and the ribbed piece will cover up the spacer nicely when that is done. As soon as I am happy with the soft helmet, cap bill and fit to the hard helmet...THEN I will start the ribbing process...

ok..
things are looking up...
re-did the bill and put it back on and started the ribbing...
and..

I think this will work out pretty good...

What I did was cut apart an old macrame' hanger...
yes...
you read that correctly...
because the cording I purchased was actually too large...so rather than run out and look for something else..
I just looked around the house...
and voila'
a macrame' plant hanger with about the diameter cording I was looking for...

so...I started the ribbing process using the cording..starting up a bit as you don't see that first 1 or 2 under the hard helmet...and I didn't want to add bulk...
so..
I sewed a starting line and using a zipper foot and my sewing machine set with the needle to the left...
I sewed in the first piece of cording...
then the second butted up against the first..
and so on...

It isn't positioned correctly in this photo under the hard helmet...but I just wanted to see what the ribs looked like...

All in all...
I think it will look pretty accurate...

You start with a "sized piece" on the bottom...
and put a much longer piece on top as you (of course) will need the extra fabric as you cover the ribs...

ugh...
no wonder I now have what I assume to be an ulcer....
lol..
too much of this kind of stuff...

this has been another project from hell...
this one is for the NSB display at the Joliet Library event...

and..

well...

I finished things up (on the soft helmet) and tried to take a photo of the headgear on....
lol...
as an excercise...try taking a photo of the top of your own head...

I also took a few photos of the piece on my make-shift head....which actually isn't very good cuz it is too small and not really "head shaped"....

anyway...

what we have so far...

Got a couple coats of paint on the Endor Donut and am waiting to add just a touch of weathering to that..

Onward and upward to the Clone Wars flag project...
my ulcer ain't gonna appreciate this project...

Laughing

Anyway...

I am using sport nylon for the flag/flags (depends how bad the first one comes out will dictate whether a second one is in order) which is probably one of the most horrible fabrics to work with...period..
it is more slippery than snot and just as nauseating to work with..
but
it is kinda/sorta a fabric similar to what real flags are made from
and
it dries fast if it gets wet...
colors do not run or fade (for the most part)
and
it is lightweight.

With that in mind I printed up one of the logos on a 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of paper and took it to Fed Ex Office and had it blown up 300%

I then cut the logo out of the black sport nylon ....to be honest...the logo should probably be brown...but since I had left over black sport nylon from another project and didn't want to spend the $$....I used black.
Also..
VERY IMPORTANT...
iron the logo!!
also
iron the white flag part!
I had the fabric folded over because I need 2 logos for each flag...one for each side....
one sided would be cheesy...and the real challenge is getting the logo on side two to line up with the first side...

Then the miserable task of trying to pin the black logo to a piece of the white sport nylon...again...this stuff is slippery...
so I used a combination of some fabric glue and lots of pins to fasten the black logo to the white background...

If you think you have enough pins on there...
got put more on!!

Then I started to stitch along the perimeter of the logo with black thread...small-ish stitches and as close to the border as possible...
when it came to some of the "points"...those I actually filled in with zig-zag stitches as one of them just ripped right off...
sport nylon is not only slippery...
but frays like crazy...

So here is flag one, side one with about 40% of the stitching along the outline done....
even pinned and glued ...the nylon was still moving around...

Here you can see the fraying issues

But putting a line of zig zag over the straight line stitching and you can cut the fraying close to the logo and it should not fray again...

That's all my stomach could handle for today...
tomorrow I will try to finish all of the stitching and zig zag on this side one...

What happens when you put heat to sport nylon? Would it stop the fray or just ruin it?
