Has this ever happened to you? You're at an event, you're excited to be there, you're talking with someone, and the words are spilling out of your mouth faster than your brain is organizing them. Well, it happened to me.

Have you ever said something and then thought to yourself, ""Did I just say something really stupid?"

Of course, then you might think to yourself, "Maybe nobody really noticed!"

But then it just gnaws at you. And you think to yourself, "I probably hurt somebody's feelings. That was really dumb."

Well, that was me. Last Saturday, at the symphony, I said something stupid. So I would like to offer an open apology to members of the Mos Eisley Base and the Dune Sea Garrison.

Most of you will have no idea who I am. (If you were there, you might remember me as a dork with a big mouth.) To give you some idea, I have a small family, all of whom are interested in joining your groups. We've been lurkers for a couple of years, quietly working on our costumes. My daughters were able to unveil their first Amidala costumes at the symphony on Saturday.

In order to take full responsibility for my stupidity, I will recant it here in all of it's glorious detail. . . .

On the sidewalk outside the convention center, one of the members encouraged us to get on the boards more often. I replied that we were on the Legion boards, but that we "liked the 501st people better than the Rebel people anyway".

Yes, I was actually THAT stupid.

What I should have said was that we, or more specifically "I", liked the darker "characters" better. Not the "people".

(You know how it is. The darker characters simply engender more fascination with some.)

Every one of you guys, Rebel Legion or 501st, are better people than I am. I regret my poor choice of words, they've been eating at me all week, and I am embarrassed and ashamed of them. By shooting my mouth off, I have insulted entire groups of people who are kinder, gentler, and more generous than I can ever hope to be.

I hope you won't hold my idiocy against me. Or if you do, that you hold it against me alone. My wife and kids hold you guys, Rebel Legion and 501st, in the highest regard and want nothing more than to become full-fledged contributing members when they are able. (I do too, but you wouldn't know it from my poor choice of words.)

Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than I should; but I know how hard you guys work at maintaining harmony between the groups.

So here it is, officially, "I am sorry. I was stupid."

In the future, I will endeavor to live by the words of Abraham Lincoln, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt."

I'm thinking that after this my next costume should be Admiral Ozzel.

Thank you for reading,

John

(To avoid any delay, I'm posting under somebody else's screen-name. In the future, I'll be posting as "Dad Bane".)

We welcome everyone, John...even if they like the darker side of the force better. Rolling Eyes

We're the good guys for a reason, my friend...no harm, no foul.

Besides...anyone whose lovely daughter can create the awesome Queen Amidala that she wore to the Symphony...we'll cut you some slack...for her sake. Wink

Only when talking to women I'm trying to impress.

As a member of both groups(RL and 501st), I don't know whether to say, "Aaah, shucks..." hi , or be upset. Mad

If that is the worst thing that ever happens to you then you are a blessed man, indeed.

Like Mike said, "No blood, no foul.".

Thanks for cutting me the slack, guys. You are kind and gentle souls all, and I will do my best to measure up.

Thanks also for the kind words about the Amidala costume. The unveiling was a big ego boost for Alexandra.

We're quite proud of Alex's work. She has learned much patience---and attention to detail---over the past year. There are 1,100 pearls on her kimono sleeves alone! The seed beads and pearls on the headdress number in uncounted thousands. (Alex also received a good deal of help from her little sister Katherine, so this was a real learning experience for both of them.)

Now that Alex has received her blessing from Carol, the Queen is looking forward to attending the LaserTag event in costume. And if the brass smiles favorably upon the idea, she hopes to join you for the Relay event as well. (We still have to pass our request up through channels.) Naturally, mom and dad will be there to back her up, and to help out in any other way we can.

Meanwhile, we'll keep working on our other costumes, and we hope to add some face characters to the roster soon. (Rhonda's Luminara is going very well and will hopefully be finished in short order.)

Speaking of which, does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably affordable sewing machine that can handle tough fabrics like denim?

We're wearing out our decade-old Huskystar sewing machine and the twenty-year-old serger. I think it may be time for a new machine before we can begin assembling Cad Bane.

I hope my reply is not too tardy. I wanted to give everyone time to read my post. Thanks again to everyone for being so forgiving and welcoming.

John

PS. In the future, you'll see me posting as Dad Bane.
