I have looked at a number of helmets posted here and on other forums, and I see the following:

Dk Grey Visor
Dk Green Visor
mottled green with dark weathering
Grey/green.

What is accepted for use by the RL?

thanks!

Currently there are no set standards for the actual paint color.

Well there's been a lot of confusion with what color the paint on the prop is over the years. It seems that true color is a dark green somewhere around "hunter" green. With lighting and LOTS of weathering it looks olive drabish, and sometimes grey.

The helmet is definitely green through, gray is completely wrong.

Here is a picture of the Wedge Helmet that I saw on display in Montreal. You can clearly see a good representation of the color in the picture below.

But it looks to be olive drab green in this picture.

I hope that helps.

Interesting... that's the ANH helmet... its also got a slightly different v sticker layout. I thought that helmet was long missing. Awesome.

The ESB & ROTJ are different, and what's used mostly for references.

When were these taken? Was this at the Identities exhibit?

Great pictures, Gil. Not to hijack this thread, but did they have any other helmets on display?

I remembered when Gil posted his photos back in Mark Bradley's hero helmets build thread for CVI. Here's the link:

Thanks for posting the link Steve, I was at work and didn't have a chance...

The pictures were from the Star Wars Identities exhibit last year. I think it was the first time some of those helmets and props had been out of the archive since filming.

We learned a TON about the Porkins helmet form those pics. I based my Porkins paint job on those pics, so thanks for that!

awesome! now i have a direction to proceed. Thanks for the comparison of front and side pictures, which clearly look different, even in the same lighting.

So dark, weathered green is the way to go.

last night I started laying layers on a couple of helmets, one for PrimetimeJedi and another for CajunWolfe.
This is the Wedge helmet. I laid Krylon Italian Olive over a coat of Walmart flat black which is not black at all, but an extremely dark grey-green. It shifted the color a bit, then I misted more WM black on top of that, followed by a second layer of Italian olive, dusted over the dusted-on black.

today I laid on an irregular broken coat of Model Master RLM Schwarzgrun (an extremely deep green-grey) with my airbrush.

the side stripe was painted with RLM grey over a irrelgular, broken mask that included strings between the tape as well as broken tape parts. Oversprayed that with Feild Grey ( a grey-green). I pulled off the masking string and irregular tape, and painted anohter coat with Feild Grey.

Both the Visor and the side stripe were wet sanded with 0000 steel wool. The effect is even better in person. Overal weathering will be done with a mix of Nuetral Grey and Khaki Drab airbrushed on in irregular patches, then scraped off where real dirt would be worn away with use.
