The top seams on the Swedish cap change the whole shape.

These scenes were some of the last to be filmed, and they needed to find wardrobe for 400 extras in about a week (with very little money).

I believe they found a bunch of surplus WW2 US Army Air Force B-1 caps at the costumer and quickly added the back flap

Check this shot:

http://ladymanson.com/galleries/movies/MoviesRS/displayimage.php?pid=104375&fullsize=1

With the trooper next to C3-PO, you can see that the seams run parallel front-to-back, with no breaks.

Modern "baseball caps" are constructed from roughly triangular or "pie slice" shapes and converge at the top of the cap, like an umbrella or round parachute.

I found this reproduction at Amazon, much cheaper than the original!

http://www.amazon.com/B-1-Summer-Flying-reproduction-aviation/dp/B008O7KTKW

Any idea how the "stamp", logo on the shield could be removed?

Adding the back flap shouldn´t be a problem if you get a fitting fabric...

Very interesting!!!!

I think the online militaria might be slightly to big for my noggin. hmm, unless I put my hair up under that hat. that might work. but if someone does figure out a way to get the stamp off the amazon one I'd love to hear it. saving money is saving money...

That is soooooo close! Dang it. Anything strong enough to remove the ink will probably discolor the fabric. Mad

Check the shot of Van Johnson in the front seat of the T-6 ("Harvard" to our friends in the Commonwealth). That is THE look for the cap - longer rounded brim and smooth curve over the front of the head.

so will the onlinemilitaria hat be accepted as formal then for this outfit? I figure that I'd ask first before I drop the loot.

You can join with the hat...
BUT
the cap would have to be made because the cap is VERY specific and can't be purchased at this time.

We are working on putting together a pattern.

Read the last couple pages of this thread carefully..
and

the costume standard has not been written for this yet but this is the wording (provided by MacBragg) that will be used re: the cap

Unique tan/cream/beige hat.

1. The brim has a rounded shape, not "squared off" like modern caps.
2. There are no rows of top stitching on the brim like on the Imperial caps or modern caps.
3. The cap is constructed from six segments, with a one of the seams in the center of the cap (you can see them in the backs of the hat, and by the way the material dips between the seams).
4. The cap is constructed to follow the natural contour of the head, and not present a "hatbox" shape with vertical sides or front.
5. There are no grommets on the body of the hat - metal or stitched.
6. Caps are made to size, there are no adjustable tabs or straps on the back of the hat.
7. There is no top "button".
8. There is a flap on the rear of the cap, that appears to be about 1/4 to 1/3 the width of the overall cap. It is much shorter than the Rebel caps worn on Endor.
9. The flap has a edge trim possibly 1/2" wide. It is not known if ther is visible top stitching or if all the seams are inside (like the Imperial caps).
10. The flap has a gradual curve from the ends, reaching maximum height at the rear of the cap. It does not cover the ears, in contrast to the sharp rise as seen on the Hoth caps.
To be accurate, these hats will have to be constructed from scratch.

Well, that´s how it came out after some sewing hours...not so bad imho, lets see if it´s good enought for registration.

In combination with my already existing RFT costume:

(Sorry for the bad pics - light in the cellar is a problem!)

Yes...I do see your costume in the judging queue...

The only problem I see with the hat is the top stitching on the brim....
the proposed costume standard does specify that there be no top stitching on the brim...

Ups, you´re right!
I didn´t read the standards when working on it, I only used some pics as reference and didn´t notice this detail on the brim.

For my construction I think it is necessary to leave the stiching on the brim for some sturdiness, so...still good enought for informal?

The Trooper judges are discussing that now...

Is there any way that the stitching can be removed?
