That brooch is a great start. What did you use to make it?

Craft Foam, of all things... Very Happy
I have a thin layer of it glued onto a thicker layer of it...
The Fabric I have is a pale steel blue colour so I painted the thicker layer sky blue/silver, then painted it over with just plain sliver...Very Happy

The pearls for the broach are tomorrows shopping...lol

When I made my gown, I just used the same pearls in the broach that I did for the "straps".

Although, now I have the right color of pearls for the gown, I need to re-do the broach's pearls somehow... Rolling Eyes

Also, anyone know where I can buy the trim, or a good tutorial on how to DIY it?

I found some online here: http://www.trimfabric.com/lt-482.html

That is what I used for mine but I did dye it with evening blue with a touch of pearl gray to get the right color. padme nightgown

I did mine by hand, but if you tug on one section, another section sort of "collapses". If I had to do it over, I'd seriously think about the trim. Though I hate having to custom dye things. Razz

As far as I can tell the original was machined, I found a really weird trim that was done this way. In that case it was two strips of vinyl linked with the machine stitching. It looked like a chain type of stitch but I have no idea what the technique is called (I know for the handsewing but nthese terms seem to change frequently) but I suspect a special machine is needed.

Look at the Darth Mano's pic, the stitching goes through the fabric but the actual thread is fine and loops back on itself.

Hand version

Machine version and apparently there is a stitch that will do this with a diamond pattern as opposed to zig zag, haven't found pictures though.

It may also be done by hand and be laced:

(check out the variations under Cretan join).

Pretty sure though that a specialised chain stitcher was used.

Nice brooch. Did you know that the pearls are silver though on the dress and brooch? Here is a good pic:

http://www.padawansguide.com/lavender_images.shtml

And this is mine:

It has a sort of Celtic "feel" to it, with an engraved pattern on it.

This is a link to my "making of" http://costumesandartwork.blogspot.com/2008/05/steel-blue-nightgown.html
